ODONTOGLOSSUMS!

The October 8, 2005, meeting of the Michiana Orchid Society will feature guest speaker Russ Vernon.  Russ is a delightful and knowledgeable orchidist who will present a program on growing Odontoglossums and a tour of the Eric Young Orchid Foundation.  He is the owner of New Vision Orchids, and will bring a wide range of plants for sale, including some Odonts and intergeneric hybrids.  Russ is an Accredited Judge with the American Orchid Society and was formerly the curator of the famous orchid collection at Ball State University.  He works for Jim Davis---you know, Garfield’s owner.

Join us on Saturday for a very interesting presentation at the River Park Branch of the South Bend Public Library on Mishawaka Avenue.  The meeting will start at 1:30 Indiana time.  Refreshments will be served.

MOS EXHIBITS IN INDY

Ron and Katie set up their first MOS exhibit at Garfield Park Conservatory for the new Central Indiana Orchid Society Fall Show on September 30.  Plants were gathered in the Holy Cross College parking lot on the Thursday before set-up, with Sylvia, Sandy and Shirley adding their plants to those of Ron and Katie. Brittney came up from IU to help with the exhibit and add her own plants.  How did the set-up go?  Did they get everything registered before the doors were locked at 9:00?  Did Rick get out of work in time to help?  We’ll find out all the details at our MOS meeting on October 8.

CHICAGOLAND ORCHID FESTIVAL

Many Michiana Orchid Society members made the trek to Chicago for the annual orchid festival frenzy.  Ron and Katie drove in, Greg went to pick up flasks, Deb and Sylvia made a two-day tour, Sandy got the flu and couldn’t go, and John was always there ahead of everyone else!  If you weren’t able to attend this year, make plans to carpool next fall.

COMING UP SOON---OUR ANNUAL FALL SHOW!

Speak nicely to your plants to encourage them to be at their best at the end of October.  Our fall show at Holy Cross College is fast approaching, and we’ll need lots of help in many areas.  Publicity, set-up, hospitality, food, clerking, sales, take-down…WE WANT YOU!  And your plants, of course.

Bring food items for our delicious buffet on Friday evening and Saturday and Sunday all day.  We need salads, veggies, cookies and brownies, chips, snacks, breakfast rolls, fruit, juice and soft drinks.

Our MOS sales area is a good way to pass on your extra divisions or plants that just aren’t right for you, while making space in your growing area for your new purchases.  Selling a few plants will offset the price of your new plants, too!

Plan to volunteer in a few areas---sign up at our October meeting!

MORE ORCHID OPS

The Mid-America Orchid Congress will meet at King’s Island near Cincinnati, Ohio, on October 21-23.  Plan a road trip to see this great show and the many vendors who will be there, or register for the featured lectures and enjoy the whole weekend.  Questions?  Contact Sandy for more information

Minutes

The September 10 MOS meeting at River Park Branch Library was called to order by the president Sandy Ohlund at 1:45 IN time. The treasurer's report was accepted as printed in the Newsletter, but the secretary's report needed a slight correction -- Jim is not out of orchids, his are still flourishing. We hope to see him at our coming show.

Current membership lists were passed out to those that didn't receive them at last meeting. If you do not have one, please ask for a copy at the next meeting. The By-laws committee has not met. Our program in October will be Russ Vernon of New Vision Orchids. He will bring plants to sell.

Ann brought several books and copies of Orchid Digest from the MOS library for us to check out. Sandy has donated the book AMERICAN CATTLEYAS by Courtney T. Hackney to our collection.

Show Report -

Deb brought sketches of designs for banners and yard signs that are being made for the show. It was moved and seconded that we order 8 small signs and a single large one. Additional signs are needed for inside the building directing visitors to both the sales and show areas.

Jean has a good publicity sheet that will help you publicize the show. If you need a copy she will be glad to supply it. Several members are helping with publicity in their locality. They include: Howard, who will work in the area south of Elkhart; Rick will help in Lafayette; Deb and Sandy will make contacts west of South Bend; Ann will concentrate in South Bend; and Sylvia in Michigan. Ideas for posters can be found at the web sit Avery.com Also Greg has updated our website including new photos and dates. Check it out and print a show poster.

Many stores have bulletin boards, any place that sells plants and restaurants often have a place for a notice. Help spread the word about our show.

All committees will need help. Plan to sign up for more than one. We need people for food, sales, hospitality, set-up, tear-down, and clerks.

Shirley has the pins to sell at the show. Sandy brought the orchid stationery and bookmarks ordered. It is possible the booklets on pests and diseases may not be available by show date.

Old business -

The Mid-American Newsletter for September 2005 was passed out. The Indianapolis Show at Garfield Park will be October 1 and 2. Ron, Katie, and Brittany Payeur will set up the MOS display on Friday, September 30. Rick plans to join them there. Bring your plants to Holy Cross by Thursday evening. Be sure to label your plants and bring a list of them also.

Other news -

John Talpa, President of Dunes Kalamazoo Orchid Society passed away recently. Many MOS members knew him and remember him attending our shows. Our deepest sympathy is extended to his family and friends.

Barbara Norkus has had a reoccurrence of bladder cancer. Please keep the Norkus family in your prayers.

Blooming plants for Bring & Brag were brought by Rick Rydzynski, Sylvia Groat, Barbara Wich, John Bannow, Katie Payeur showing The Family Collection, Harry Moskowitz, and Shirley Keim.

Plants to sell were brought by John and Sylvia. Ron and Brittany brought packets of fertilizer to sell.

The slide program on Orchid Design discussed how judges view an exhibit. The emphasis doesn't have to be in the center, instead the exhibit should show harmony throughout.

The meeting concluded at 3:45.

Respectfully submitted,

Barbara Wich, co-secretary
