SHOW BIZ!

MOS MEETING OCTOBER 13 AT THE LIBRARY

The October meeting of the Michiana Orchid Society will be held on Saturday, October 13.  We’ll be back at our normal meeting place, the River Park Branch of the South Bend Public Library, across the street from the Potawattomi Greenhouses on Mishawaka Avenue.  The subject of our meeting will be our up-coming fall show---set-up is Friday, October 26, starting at 3:00.  Ribbon judging will begin at 8:00 on Saturday morning, and the show will be open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, October 27-28, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM EDT both days.  Take-down will be at 5:00 PM on Sunday.

Be sure to sign up for several committees---we need volunteers in all areas!  Publicity is crucial, so be sure to let your local media know about our show.  We’ll need clerks for ribbon judging on Saturday morning---this is a great opportunity to learn a lot!  We also need members to bring food for our hospitality room, help with sales, set-up and take-down, and of course, we need your blooming orchid plants and some extra foliage for our display.  You know what they say---“Vote early, vote often!”  We just want you to volunteer often.

The MOS meeting will be held at the River Park Branch of the South Bend Public Library at 1:30 PM Eastern Daylight Time.  Guests are always welcome and refreshments will be served.  See you there!

CHICAGOLAND ORCHID FESTIVAL!

Many Michiana Orchid Society members made the trek to Chicago to participate in this annual orchid feeding frenzy.  Some started at Natt’s and worked their way north, others went in the other direction.  Many went to all four sites:  Natt’s Orchids in Naperville, Windsong Orchids in Sycamore, Oak Hill Gardens in Dundee, and Hausermann’s Orchids in Villa Park.  Vendors from everywhere were also at the host sites---coming from Brazil, Thailand, Ecuador, Venezuela, and also Florida, California, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Connecticut, and Minnesota.

Some of us made a day of it, some returned for a second day trip, and some stayed overnight and were there relatively early for the second day.  We carpooled and passed other members at the various sites.  Many MOS members were seen wandering through in a daze, grazing through the refreshments, and then going back for more orchids.  Perfect weather and great orchid opportunities combined to make this a great Chicagoland Orchid Fest.  No one got stuck in the mud this year!

PLANNING AHEAD……

Coming up faster than you think, the 19th World Orchid Conference will be held January 23-27, 2008, in Miami, Florida.  It’s not too early to start thinking about heading south to this lavish orchid show.  The WOC is held in a different country every three years; it hasn’t been in the US since 1984 when the 11th World Orchid Conference was held in Miami. (Sandy was there!)  The rooms in the conference hotel are already sold out, but there are quite a few other hotels in the area, and they’re a bit cheaper, too!  Quite a few MOS members are planning to go---we’ll all have to get together when we’re there!

For more information on this orchid extravaganza, go to the World Orchid Conference website:  www.19woc.com .  There will be internationally famous speakers as well as exhibitors and vendors from all over the world. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to attend a WOC in the USA!

As always, Chicagofest proved to be an enjoyable day.  There was an orchid waiting to come home with each person; however, many additional orchids came home with each of us attending.  The weather was great and all enjoyed themselves.

Minutes for September

Meeting called to order at 1:35.  Membership list needs to updated to reflect changes in phone numbers, emails etc. Christmas party cannot be held at the greenhouse due to costly fees.  We will need to find another place.  River Park library may be closed for 6 months for renovations.  Ann will keep us posted and we could use another library in the mean time.   We could have Christmas Party at the main library community room. Jean told us about her plans for publicity.  Show Poster needs to be updated on website. Speakers need to be lined up for our show, ribbons are in, Larry will do trophies. Judges are invited.  Bring and brag followed by adjournment
