MOS MEETING NOVEMBER 10 AT THE LIBRARY

The November meeting of the Michiana Orchid Society will be held on Saturday, November 10, at our normal meeting place, the River Park Branch of the South Bend Public Library, across the street from the Potawattomi Greenhouses on Mishawaka Avenue.

On the agenda for this meeting will be a show discussion and the report of our nominating committee of Ron, Sylvia and Lisa.  We’re trying to spread out MOS responsibilities.  And the results of the program questionnaire are in---I found them!---so we will discuss the direction of future programs.

Sylvia will present a short potting demonstration---how does she keep those catts so healthy?  Learn about the needs of our favorite epiphytes. Bring your plants for show and tell, and bring your questions for other members.  Together we can probably find some answers!

The MOS meeting will be held at the River Park Branch of the South Bend Public Library at 1:30 PM Eastern Standard Time.  Guests are always welcome and refreshments will be served.  See you there!

THANKS TO ALL OUR SHOW VOLUNTEERS!

Our annual fall show at Holy Cross College was a great success, with a record number of AOS awards---seven!   There was wonderful participation by Michiana Orchid Society members, both in providing plants and artwork, and in setting up the show.  Volunteers handled publicity, with flyers and news items in local media, the large banners at the entrance to Holy Cross (thanks, Deb and Nick), and we finally had WNDU-TV coverage on Sunday.

Our food and hospitality area was outstanding, as always, with plenty of delicious food brought by MOS members, and supervised by Ann and Barb.  Steak ‘n Shake (thanks, Sue) contributed chili and all the fixin’s, as well as paper and plasticware.  MOS members were busy helping to build our lovely display, which won the AOS Show Trophy for best exhibit.  Other members helped our guests bring in their plants and also helped them take things back out to their vans on Sunday afternoon.  Katie orchestrated our growing art, photography and craft display area, as well as providing photography for our seven AOS awards.

Many of our members gained experience by helping with ribbon judging, some for the very first time!  Judging and clerking were Sherry, Don, Lynda, Lisa, Barb, Deb, Bruce, Skye, Andrew, Shirley, Sylvia, Vicky, Sue, Ron, Katie, Brittany, Greg, Rob, Marilyn and Sandy.

The sales area offered orchids and supplies as well as other orchid-related items, and Sherry’s streps went home with many attendees.  The free cannas and tuberoses were an added bonus.  Fu-Chih provided TDS meters and test strips at a bargain price.  Sylvia’s potting demonstration gave many neophyte orchid growers some great close-up information.

As Sunday afternoon arrived, tear-down went quickly and the free raffle orchids were delivered to the winners by MOS members.  A big thank-you to everyone who participated in our show this year!

COMING UP!

January 23-27, 2008    19th World Orchid Conference, Miami, FL

February 1-3, 2008   Grand Valley Orchid Society Show, Meijer Gardens, MI

PLANNING AHEAD……

Coming up faster than you think, the 19th World Orchid Conference will be held January 23-27, 2008, in Miami, Florida.  It’s not too early to start thinking about heading south to this lavish orchid show.  The WOC is held in a different country every three years; it hasn’t been in the US since 1984 when the 11th World Orchid Conference was held in Miami. (Sandy was there!)  The rooms in the conference hotel are already sold out, but there are quite a few other hotels in the area, and they’re a bit cheaper, too!  Quite a few MOS members are planning to go---we’ll all have to get together when we’re there!

For more information on this orchid extravaganza, go to the World Orchid Conference website:  www.19woc.com .  There will be internationally famous speakers as well as exhibitors and vendors from all over the world. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to attend a WOC in the USA!

Welcome! I just got a note today from Barb Sylvester. She missed our show but stays with us as a member and wanted to inform us of Ernie Finney's death last June. An article of Mr. Finney's career with Hausermann's appears in the latest issue of the IPA journal. Deb will bring a copy to the meeting.

Minutes from October

The meeting was called to order at 1:30.  Minutes and Treasurer’s Report were approved as published in the newsletter.  Two guests were present.  Lynda showed new items for the sales table.  Plans were made for the upcoming show.  Posters were distributed for members to display.  Everyone was encouraged to sign up for jobs at the show. Nominating committee will be Ron, Sylvia and Lisa. Sue presented an explanation of how to hammer flowers into paper. Show and tell and refreshments followed.
