PAPHS ON TAP FOR NOVEMBER 12 MEETING

Come on out to the November 12, 2005, meeting of the Michiana Orchid Society---it’s time to learn more about those “other orchids”---the Paphiopedilums, or Paphs.  Some orchid people think that paphs are not orchids---and some paph people think that paphs are the only orchids!  Learn about the many species and hybrids, and how you can grow them yourself.  There must be a reason why some orchidists are so fanatical about the slipper orchids!

The meeting will begin at 1:30 Eastern Standard Time, at the River Park Branch of the South Bend Public Library on Mishawaka Avenue.  Refreshments will be served.

If you still have orchids to sell, bring them to the meeting---perhaps members have a little money left after the show.  See you there!

THANKS, EVERYONE, FOR A GREAT SHOW!

The Michiana Orchid Society Annual Fall Show was a success!  We had great participation by members---and outstanding food, as always.  WNDU TV provided live coverage on Saturday morning, and taped footage of the show was shown throughout the weekend.

There were two American Orchid Society awards:  a 77 point HCC to Phrag Sorcerer’s Apprentice, grown by our own Rob Halgren, and an 80 point AM to Phrag Eric Young, grown by a member of the Dunes-Kalamazoo Orchid Society.  Congratulations!

Our members provided a lovely island exhibit, in addition to two smaller exhibits by Sherry Burtchett & Shirley Keim, and Sylvia Groat and John Bannow.  Members also participated in the Orchid Art, Photography, Orchid Collections, Arrangements and Orchids in Use categories.

There will be a full report on the show in the December newsletter.

MOS Participates in Indianapolis Show

The Central Indiana Orchid Society held its annual fall show at Garfield Park Conservatory in Indianapolis the first weekend in October. The Michiana Orchid Society was among the four vendors and four societies participating in the show.

It all began on Friday September 30 with Ron Payeur gathering up Sandy, Shirley and Sylvia’s plants in the parking lot at Holy Cross.  With these orchid and a few of their own, plus various display paraphanalia, Ron and Katie managed to get everything into their Camry.  This being their first time entering and displaying orchids for MOS, both Ron and Katie “held their breath” the entire trip down for fear of damaging any stem, blossom, or petal of their precious cargo.

Upon arriving at the conservatory, Ron began the registration process while Katie began setting up the display.  They were later joined by daughter Brittany who helped both mom and dad.  Rick Hendrickson, after being stuck in traffic for over 2.5 hours, was able to join them for a few moments, giving last minute assurances that everything was indeed being handled as it should be.

Having spent the night in Bloomington at Brittany’s place, Ron and Katie returned Saturday morning to assist the judges as clerks.  After the ribbon judging they accepted an invitation to sit in on the AOS judging.

After the AOS judging the Payeurs had a chance to see the results of MOS’s enteries.  Of MOS’s thirty entries, twenty received ribbons.  There were three first place ribbons, seven second place ribbons and ten third place ribbons.  Eighteen ribbons went to orchids, one to a photo entry, and one to our display.  The display came in second out of eight displays.  (The video at last month’s meeting was well-timed!)

Take down on Sunday presented the Payeurs with their greatest challenge. It was easy enough taking down the display.  Getting the orchid back into boxes and then into the Camry was harder than taking them out had been.

Ron and Katie wish to thank Sandy, Shirley, Sylvia and Brittany for entrusting their beautiful orchids to them for the weekend.  Without them the MOS display would not have been successful.

Along with their thanks, Ron, Katie, and Brittany wish to encourage all MOS members to continue participating in up coming shows.  If you have not participated before, consider having your own “first time”.   For Brittany, it was her first time entering an orchid show.  She entered the only orchid she had in bloom.  Not expecting the orchid to receive any recognition, she was quite surprised when it placed third in its category.  The ribbon was an added bonus to the satisfaction she felt in doing what she could as part of MOS.  Besides, as she later said, “One hundred percent of my entries won.”

Minutes from October

The October MOS meeting was called to order by President Sandy Ohlund at 1:45. Present were 20 members and 3 guests. The secretary and treasurer's reports were accepted as published in the Newsletter. A nominating committee formed included Sylvia Groat, Barbara Wich, Ron and Katie Payeur. They will present a slate of officers at the November meeting. Additional nominations can be made at that time.

Show Business:

Publicity continues to dominate out concerns. Jean Moskowitz is covering the Elkhart area including Channel 34. Sandy brought posters printed on orchid colored paper for anyone to use. Check out website for a show poster in color. The South Bend Visitor's Center can put a notice on their web site if we contact them.

Show schedule:

Friday - Set up at 3:00 pm

Saturday - Clerks at 8:00 for judging

Open to the public 10:00 - 5:00

Sunday - Open to the public 10:00 - 5:00

Take down at 5:00 pm

Old Business:

Ron, Katie, and Brittany Payeur set up the MOS exhibit at the recent Indy Orchid Show in Indianapolis. This was their first time to put together a show display. Katie reported their assigned spot #11 was small, and somewhat difficult to work with, but the exhibit won Second Place! Of the 30 entries, 20 received ribbons. They also clerked and attended the judges luncheon. Everyone was very friendly. Katie demonstrated how they learned about combining a tag of the plant name, a show slip, and a ribbon all in one place on the pot.

New Business:

Watch for the new Mid-America web site -- MAOC are the initials.

Plants for Bring and Brag were brought by Sylvia Groat, Harry Moskowitz, Rick Rydzynski, Dennis Norkus, and Katie Payeur.

Russ Vernon of New Vision Orchids at Yorktown, IN presented a program of slides about growing Odontoglossums. He discussed the Eric Young Foundation on the isle of Jersey near England - its history and current operation on hybridizing orchids. If you plan to visit that area, let the Foundation know you are coming and they will give you a tour. Stay two or more days to completely understand their operation.

He further commented on growing Odonts saying they need cool nights, 52 degrees is perfect. He likes to grow in fiber pots as they evaporate thus cooling the roots. Under ideal conditions they will bloom three times in two years.

He uses a mix of 50% core ( coconut chips) which have been soaked and rinsed twice, 25% perlite and 25% fine charcoal. He says if you use Pre-mix, repot every year as it gets acidic.

New Vision Orchids is open by appointment. It's west of Muncie toward I-69. He will e-mail their orchid list if you request it.

The meeting adjourned at 3:35 for refreshments.

Respectfully submitted,

Barbara Wich - co-secretary
