We
can use more help in many areas, especially publicity and clerking on Saturday
morning. For publicity, you can help by
informing your local newspapers and radio stations about our show! Post those flyers in garden centers,
libraries, and other public places. And
come early on Saturday morning for a continental breakfast and judging. You don’t have to be an expert to clerk---you
just need to be able to place ribbons on plants or read tags. It’s fun and you’ll learn a lot---give
clerking a try!
WORKSHOPS
We need a few members to give a workshop
on orchid culture, repotting, deflasking, compots, etc. on Saturday or Sunday. The public wants your expertise! Let us know if you would like to provide one
of these valuable learning experiences.
VENDORS
The vendors for our show will include
Green Acres Orchids from Charlotte, Michigan; Hilltop Orchids of Cloverdale,
Indiana; Porter’s Orchids of Grand Ledge, Michigan; Purple Clay Imports from
Illinois; and members’ plants on the MOS table.
Bring your extras for sales and save up your money so you can join the
“feeding frenzy” at the show.
LIBRARY BOOKS
If you have Michiana Orchid
Society library books, you might need to bring them to the show. “Coffee table” books are not used in judging,
but other books on specific types of orchids---phals, dendrobiums,
miniatures, etc.---or orchids from specific areas---orchids of Panama,
Madagascar, Brazil, etc.---are used in judging.
If you have checked out books of this type, please bring them to the
show on Friday, since they will be needed for judging early Saturday morning.
THE ORCHID ZONE REVISITED

F. and Rob H. are gathering orders for a group order to the Orchid Zone. We haven’t had the opportunity to order from
our favorite paph and phrag
grower for a long time. Don’t miss
out---orders must be sent to Greg at glf@proinnovation.com by Friday, October 29, to be included.

Calling All Members.....
The show is fast coming up and we need displays for the public. I would
like to see more displays put in by the members. You remember Michele and
Paul's at Fernwood? A great idea and so simple to do with just a few plants.
So get those thinking caps on and let's see what we can come up with. We
will still need the large display and all can help with that. Don't forget
collectables, art work and arrangements. Let's make this a great show.
Sylvia
The MOS meeting was
brought to order on Oct 9th, 2004 by Sandy Ohlund. The
minutes and treasury report were approved as published in the last
newsletter.
There were ten guest who introduced themselves and told about their
interest in orchids. Two became members at this meeting, Frank Thomas and
Shirley Vanderbosch.
Sandy brought in two books that the society will be able to sell at our
shows. An Orchidist's Lexicon. With a Pronouncing
Glossary of Orchid Terms.
This is were you will learn how to pronounce those names....The book is
loaded with good information. The second book is Your First Orchids and How
to Grow Them.
Posters for the Fall Show were passed out to the members for display.
Put one in your car in the back side window, just make sure it does not
block your view while driving.
Show Discussion: 1.Sign up sheet for all the committees was passed
around. 2.Sandy announced that we will have just two venders, Green Acres
and HillTop. Tim Volas and
Larry Galdes will not be selling at the show this
time. There was discussion about asking for another vender. E-mail your
ideas to Sandy as soon as possible with your wishes. 3.Publicity, we need to
get the news out to our home paper.
Rick Henderson and Sylvia Groat gave a report on the Show in
Indianapolis.
Fernwood has asked us if we are going to be putting in a spring show in
2005. We need to decide what we would like to do as soon as possible. They
need the information for advertisements and their schedule.
The December meeting will be held at Rick and Vicki Rydzynski's
home.
Thank you for hosting this meeting. Just a added note to the members to
think about hosting June and July meeting for next year.
Bring and Brag by Shirley, Rick and Vicki, Sandy and Sylvia.
Refreshments by Jean Moskowitz and Ann Kuntz.
Ann arranged for the meeting to be held at the main library of South
Bend. We enjoyed a slide program from the Orchid Digest and narrated by
Sandy Ohlund '40 Species Everyone Should Have in Their Greenhouse' by
Fordyce 'Red' Marsh. Thank you Ann.
Sandy announced the passing of a founding member Earl Koldyke.
Sept
27,1932-Sept 27 2004. It was decided to establish a 'Best of Show' in the
memory of Earl. He always sponsored this trophy in all our shows. Earl was a
tireless worker and always made up the layout for all the shows. We will all
miss him.
Respectfully submitted,
Sylvia Groat, co-secretary
