THE
WILL HAVE AN AOS JUDGED ORCHID SHOW!
And Michiana Orchid Society will be part
of it! Deb Longworth is our liaison with the Central Indiana Orchid
Society in planning this new event. Deb
visited the orchid show at the State Fair last summer, and became interested in
participating in this state-wide orchid event.
This year the show will have American Orchid Society judging, and MOS
will have an exhibit at the show. Dates
for the orchid show are August 10-13, with set-up early on August 10, and
judging that same evening. Our
participation and donation to this event will give us free passes to the State
Fair for those who set up and take down our display. More information will be announced as it
becomes available.
This is an exciting opportunity to do
something different in the summer.
Let’s get together and make the trip down to Indy to set up a display
and enjoy the fair. Tell your plants
that they no longer have the summer off---they need to bloom in mid-August,
too!

Hipps
Hollow Plant Swap has moved to
since
YES,
we are having the Plant Swap at our new place this year. We cant let this great
experience NOT HAPPEN, especially since I need lots of plants for my new yard.
Henry & I have been working hard to get it as presentable as possible, but
bear in mind, we are a work in progress.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This
is an idea I read about in one of my gardening magazines & thought it would
be a great thing for all of us gardening enthusiasts………
Do
you have some perennials that you need to divide? Are you growing some special
or
rare
annuals, or other plants from seed? Do you have some Black Raspberry canes, or
other
type veggies or fruits to share? Might you have some extra little shrub or tree
seedlings coming up somewhere that you don’t want, or some Dahlia bulbs, etc,
etc, etc?
Well…….wouldn’t
it be a good thing to bring those extras here to our place on this day, along
with some other gardeners, and swap for some Exciting NEW plants that you don’t
have????????? In the past 4 Swaps, I have gotten lots of really unusual and
interesting new plants that I did not have before, and gotten new homes for my
extra plants, for someone else to enjoy.
With
everyone’s busy schedule, it is very difficult to pick a day that works for
everyone, and we have picked May 27th for this year, which is
Memorial Day Week-end. I hope this works for most, as I want everyone to come.
Of
course, every year we hope for good weather, but take note of the Rain Date,
the next day at 2pm. If you are coming from a distance, feel free to call if
you have concerns about the weather, sometimes, it may be raining where you
are, but not here.
This
is coming to you now, 4 weeks before the Swap, so you will have time to be
digging, dividing, deciding, and potting up those extras.
HOW
IT WORKS
Bring
any amount of potted up, or bare root plants that you want to trade, I wont
have as much this year, because of the move, but, I have already been digging
up, I usually pot up mine, because I am getting plants out way ahead, but some
people bring bare roots, that they have dug that day. Some people bring a few
plants, some people bring a truck load. You are welcome with any amount.
You
should have your plants here NO LATER THAN 1pm, as you can see, if you are late
with your plants, you might have less to choose from & others won’t get to
choose from yours.
When
you arrive with your plants, we will give you an area to unload, then, you can
go about looking at all the other offerings, and start picking some new plants
to take home.
A
FEW SUGGESTIONS
If
possible, it would probably be good to bring more than one of a variety, in
case more than one person would like it. Label your plants with at least NAME
of plant, and any other info that you are inclined to supply, such as color,
height, spread, sun, shade, etc. (old mini-blinds cut up make wonderful labels)
Most people have just put the name on, and that is fine.

We
plan to serve Ice Tea, Lemonade, and Cookies this day, and I would love to show
you my gardens, such as they are, so far. I know we will all have a FUN day.
If you know of any other gardeners, that I may not know, please invite them, the more the merrier, (and more plants)
For
anyone newer to gardening, who may not have plants yet to share, us, more
experienced gardeners are always willing to share, so come anyway, there was
lots left over in the years past. After the Swap, I, then, call gardeners that
could not make the Swap, and they come & get some plants, so keep that in
mind, if this date does not work for you, give me a call after the swap.
HOPE
TO SEE YOU ALL HERE WITH LOTS OF PLANTS

An Orchid Show is
being planned during the Indiana State Fair in August. Deb attended a recent
meeting in the Indiana Orchid Societies and plans are to set up Thursday, August
10 with ribbon judging that evening. Take down will be Sunday, August 13 at
7:00 pm when the fair closes. Six entry passes with parking permits will be
available for those assisting. This will be mainly an educational display to
inform the public about orchid societies in the state. There will be no orchid
sales.
Deb made a motion to
donate $50.00 from MOS to the Orchid Societies of Indiana to aid with expenses
of the orchid display at the Indiana State Fair. It was seconded by Shirley,
and all present were in favor of this donation.
Bring and Brag
brought forth lovely blooms by Sylvia Groat, John Bannow, Skye Critchlow, Bruce
Critchlow, Sherry Burtchett, Harry Moskowitz, Lynda Pelkey, and Rick
Hendrickson.
We adjourned for
refreshments, then Katie Payeur presented the program on Mounting Orchids.
Katie says her experience in mounting orchids in only 8 months after being
inspired by Walt Flisnik of Green Acres Orchids. She gave a very complete
demonstration of mounting including different mounting surfaces, sterilizing
tools, and straightening wire. Katie added suggestions and little
"tricks" she has developed that make it easier for someone who has
less strength than Walt accomplish the same artistic results. Katie also
prepared a two page handout listing equipment, supplies and further ideas for
mounting orchids.
We further adjourned
at 3:45.
