MOS MEETING MAY 12
The May 12 meeting of the Michiana Orchid Society will feature an Orchid Digest slide program on “The Intermediate and Warm-growing Oncidiinae”….that means all those colorful and beautifully-patterned flowers that you have always wanted. Don Keim will narrate the script of this new program which should be spectacular as well as informative.
The MOS meeting will be held at the River Park Branch of the South Bend Public Library at 1:30 PM Eastern Standard Time. Guests are always welcome and refreshments will be served. See you there!
I will be bringing about three trays of Phrags that I want to sell. Prices 5 to 15 dollars. Sylvia
THREE RIVERS SHOW IN FORT WAYNE MAY 5-6
The last show of the spring season will be the Three Rivers Orchid Society show in Fort Wayne. Michiana will set up an exhibit at the Three Rivers show on May 5 and 6 at the Franke Park Pavilion I next to the Children’s Zoo in Fort Wayne. Deb L., Sandy O. and Sue Voelker will set up the MOS display, with orchid plants provided by Don Keim, Sylvia G., Deb and Sandy. Don K. will visit the exhibits and sales areas on Saturday. Bruce C. will check out the show on Sunday and take down our exhibit.
If you’re in the Fort Wayne area this weekend, stop by and enjoy the show!
SHOW IN INDIANAPOLIS APRIL 14-15
The spring show sponsored by the Central Indiana Orchid Society was held in Indianapolis on April 14-15, at the beautifully renovated Garfield Park Conservatory. Ron and Katie, Bruce and Skye set up our exhibit, which garnered many ribbons. Additional ribbons were won by Jean M. for her orchid craft items, and photography by Katie and drawings by Andrew.
Sandy, Ron and Katie were there Saturday for judging. Even though everyone went to Indy in good weather and Sandy had promised no snow or ice storms for this show….on Saturday when Sandy left for home she went from rain to freezing rain to a snowstorm all the way to South Bend---where, surprisingly, there was no snow. A mid-April snowstorm and it was Sandy’s luck to have to drive back in it! Take-down was accomplished by Ron, Katie, Bruce, Skye and Rick H. Bruce packed all those plants into his truck and brought everything back. Thanks, everyone, for another beautiful exhibit!
MID-AMERICA IN GLENCOE, ILLINOIS, APRIL 27-29
The MAOC (Mid-America Orchid Congress) met at the Illinois Orchid Society Spring Show at the Chicago Botanical Gardens in Glencoe, Illinois, on April 27-29. This was a spectacular event with many exhibits and vendors, as well as an exciting slate of guest speakers. Michiana set up a display of photography by Katie and drawings by Andrew.
Speakers included Patricia Harding (The Hunleya Clade), Hadley Cash (Pink and White Complex Paphs), Eric Christenson (Maxillarias and The Orchids of Peru), and Alfredo Manrique (Phrag kovachii).
MOS members participating in this orchid event included Deb, Sandy, Ron, Katie, Brittany and Don.
SUMMERFIELD ORCHIDS CLOSES
Summerfield Orchids, near Ann Arbor, Michigan, has closed. Donna and her husband are moving to Traverse City, and orchid people came from near and far to enjoy the tremendous orchid sale in mid-April. From Michiana, several members trekked up to participate in the feeding frenzy---Sylvia, Shirley, Vicky and Linda arrived only two hours after the start of the first day of the sale, and much of the stock was already gone! Plants sold very quickly and there was almost nothing left at the end of the sale. We’ll miss Summerfield Orchids and the gorgeous plants that Donna produced for us.

PLANNING AHEAD……
Coming up faster than you think, the 19th World Orchid Conference will be held January 23-27, 2008, in Miami, Florida. It’s not too early to start thinking about heading south to this lavish orchid show. The WOC is held in a different country every three years; it hasn’t been in the US since 1984 when the 11th World Orchid Conference was held in Miami. (Sandy was there!) For more information on this orchid extravaganza, go to the World Orchid Conference website: www.19woc.com . There will be internationally famous speakers as well as exhibitors and vendors from all over the world. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to attend a WOC in the USA!
