                                 Lansing Show:   Sandy’s Baby

MOS - 1st Place 25 sq. Ft. Society Exhibit

                                                                                              Lynda’s UNK Cymbidium -1st Place & Trophy

Four Women, a Jeep and Some Orchids.

Early Friday morning, February 22, as various MOS members anticipated starting their day, nowhere was there to be found a severe weather warning, school closings or reports of hazardous road conditions. After all the efforts to gather plants, collects pictures, photos, quilts, backdrop materials etc., in addition to making traveling plans to accommodate as many people as needed transportation in as few vehicles as possible,  MOS’s participation in the Lansing show was on its way to becoming a reality.

The first step of the way was for Sandy and Katie to meet Sylvia to see what we actually had to work with for our exhibit.  When all the materials were gathered in one place we were no longer certain we could get everything into the jeep.  Thanks to some ingenious packing and the willingness of Sylvia’s passengers to be physically intimate with boxes, above, below and all around them, the three ladies began the trip to Lansing.  Along the way they picked up a fourth member of the society.

At Lansing, Sylvia, Sandy and Sally set up our exhibit.  Katie worked on registering all the entries.  When the exhibit was fininshed Sylvia and Sally headed home.  Sandy and Katie made the tags and put the labels in place while waiting for their rides to take them to their resting places for the night.

Early the next morning Sandy, Ron, Katie and Brittany participated in ribbon and AOS judging.  When the judging was completed, our society had received a blue ribbon for its exhibit.  Lynda had a blue ribbon and a trophy ribbon for the “unknown” cymbidium she had send for the exhibit.  Other MOS members also received ribbons, 1st, 2nd and 3rd places, for their various plants.  We also received a number of ribbons for the entries in the arts and crafts categories.

The judging finished, the judging members of our society then had time to enjoy the other exhibits, vendors, and those friends that are known only through association with the world of orchids.  Of course, it’s always fun to bump into other members of our society at a show.  That Saturday we ran into Bruce and Skye.  We have no idea who may have been there on Sunday except for Bruce.  Thank you Bruce for being there to take down the exhibit and see to it that all our entries arrived safely back home. Thanks also to everyone who brought the items that Bruce brought back.

                                                                        Sandy’s New Baby.

Although it is a very rewarding to receive ribbons and trophies at a show, Sandy brought home a trophy that few of us will ever have the opportunity to acquire.  We all know that it is possible to purchase a plant that is in an exhibit.  But not many of have a chance to purchase a plant that has just been AOS awarded at the show one is attending.  Sandy was very lucky.  She was able to purchase one of her favorite types of orchids, a long-tailed Paphiopedelum, that received two AOS awards that Saturday.  Maybe, just maybe, Sandy will bring in her new baby and tell us about the awards it received.

Opportunity Knocks

The first weekend in May, Centre Library is doing a gardening program focusing on roses, irises, dahlias and orchids.  They have asked us to do the orchid portion of the program.  We have committed to doing an hour long talk on basic orchid growing.  In addition, the library would like it if we could set up a display, not an exhibit, on Saturday to garner interest for Sunday’s programs.  They would also like it if we could have people available from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday to answer any orchid growing questions that participants may have.  What a great opportunity to let people know that we are here….and that we will be having a show this Fall.

How real or unreal can an orchid be?

Look carefully at the following three pictures.  We will answer the above question at this month’s meeting.

Invitation to have your orchids AOS judged and awarded

If you are the proud owner of an orchid in bloom that you think may be worthy of an AOS award contact Sandy or the Payeurs.  Sandy, as a certified judge, and Ron, Katie, and Brittany, as student judges -- are required to attend a certain number of AOS judging sessions at the Great Lakes Judging Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. These sessions are held the third Saturday of each month.  If any of the above is going to a session at the time your orchid is in bloom, they are willing to take your plant with them to be judged according to AOS standards.

This note is to invite you to this spring’s Mid-America Orchid Congress that will take place in Troy (MI), in conjunction with the Michigan Orchid Society Show, March 14-16, 2008. The Congress will take place in Hilton Troy, while the orchid show will take place in the MSU Management & Education Center, close to the hotel. All events that involve live orchids – admiring orchids and purchasing them from the numerous vendors that will be present, will take place at the MSU MEC. All standard Congress activities, including our entertaining auction, the banquet with its own entertainment (The Japan Grand Prix show) will take place at the hotel. Please note that the Congress is an event separate from the orchid show. The Michigan Orchid Society is welcoming you to their show but, unless you have been invited by the Society directly, they will not provide hospitality to MAOC Congress attendants.

Spring 2008

Mid-America Orchid Congress

Troy, Michigan

March 14-16, 2008

Dear Mid-America Friends:

We hope you can join us March 14-16, 2008 at the Mid-America Orchid Congress meeting in Troy,

Michigan. As always, the weekend will feature an interesting and informative lecture series, as well as great

entertainment at our fund-raiser and banquet on Saturday evening.

You’ll also want to attend the Michigan Orchid Society’s Annual Palm Sunday Orchid Show, held this year at

the MSU Management & Education Center. This promises to be an impressive show with many well-known

vendors. The Michigan Orchid Society is generously providing lecture facilities, and Mid-America activities

will take place at both the Management Education Center and the nearby Detroit/Troy Hilton Hotel. If you

wish to judge or clerk at the orchid show, please contact Jan Yates (jyates11@earthlink.net) for more

information. Also, please note that there will not be a hospitality room for Mid-America registrants at the

show or at the hotel.

The Mid-America lecture series on Saturday afternoon will be held at the Management Education Center.

Erich Michel of Hoosier Orchid Company will discuss “Conservation of Terrestrial Orchid Species by

Asymbiotic Propagation.” We look forward to “Growing Terrestrial Orchids” presented by Ron McHatton,

Ph.D., Director of Education and Regional Operations of the American Orchid Society. In addition, Russ

Vernon of New Vision Orchids will discuss “How not to grow Phalaenopsis”. Our final lecture will be

presented at the Mid-America banquet.

Saturday evening entertainment at the Detroit Hilton Hotel begins with the popular Mid-America fund-raising

event that is so much more than an auction. Of special interest, the auction will include several duplicate

original botanical plates from Harvard University that were recently donated to Mid-America. Following the

auction, plan to attend the Mid-America banquet and enjoy our after-dinner speaker, Karen Muir, who will

update us on the Japan Grand Prix show.

Finally, we hope you’ll attend the Mid-America committee meetings on Friday evening, as well as the

Affiliated Societies Breakfast and the Mid-America business meeting on Sunday morning.

We hope to see you in Michigan!
