BRING ON THE PHRAGS!
Our March 11, 2006 meeting will feature a presentation by Rob Halgren on Phragmipedium besseae and its hybrids. That’s the glowing red slipper orchid that you can see from across the room! Rob is the owner of Littlefrog Farm Orchids and is a member of the Michiana Orchid Society, even though he now lives in Stockbridge, Michigan. He’s also a Probationary Judge with the American Orchid Society. Rob will bring an assortment of orchids for sale.
The March 11 MOS meeting will begin at 1:30 Eastern Standard Time---that’s 12:30 if you live in Central time in parts of Indiana. It will be held at the River Park Branch of the South Bend Public Library on Mishawaka Avenue. Refreshments will be served. See you there!
I will present a short report on Masdevallias. Shirley
MORE PHRAGS!
If you have a yearning for more slipper orchid information, the May Seminar of the Great Lakes Judging Center is for you! The seminar is free and open to the public and will include a presentation on paphs: “Back to the Bulldogs” by Paul Philips of Ratcliffe Orchids, LLC, in Florida and a talk on phrags: “Phrags---An Overview” by Glen Decker of Piping Rock Orchids in New York.

Additional presentations will include Greg Filter: “Phrag Breeding Trends”; Rob Halgren: “Phrag besseae---Past, Present and Future”; Jim Heilig: “Bulldog Backcrosses”; Carolyn Spoerl-Carpenter: “Fatal Flaws---Fact or Fiction”; and Diane Burton: “Awarded Long-Tails”.

MOS EXHIBITS AT GLOS SHOW
The Michiana Orchid Society put in an exhibit at the Greater Lansing Orchid Society Show on February 25-36. Two carloads of MOS members and plants drove up to East Lansing to set up the display: Ron, Katie and Brittany Payeur, Rick Hendrickson and Sandy Ohlund made the trip on Friday afternoon, gathering plants from the Payeur family collections, Sylvia, Sherry and Sandy. Pat Pritchard and husband Dave sent artwork and collections. Photos were exhibited by Ron and Katie, and Sylvia sent two lovely orchid arrangements.
Katie set up the display, while Ron and Brittany did registration and name tags. Rick and Sandy cruised the vendors’ tables, gathering a few plants that they HAD to have. All five members were there early Saturday morning to participate in judging. Shirley popped in on Saturday, too.
Sylvia and Sherry drove up on Sunday to find that the vendors’ tables were almost bare! Great weather turned the “Snow Show” into a “Sun Show”, and the orchid-hungry folks of East Lansing turned out in record numbers. At tear-down time, Sylvia and Sherry packed the “Orchidmobile” with our display plants and props, and drove home uneventfully on dry pavement.
Thanks, everyone, for helping to make our MOS display a success!
UNEVENTFUL???
Well, the drive home in Sherry’s Orchidmobile was uneventful, but a day or two later, that would change. Sherry felt very fatigued and went to see her doctor, who immediately put her in the hospital. Sherry is now more bionic, with six stints in her arteries! She is home from the hospital and is feeling lots better!
ORCHID CLASS AT HCC
Holy Cross College will offer a class on growing orchids on March 22 and 29, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. Sandy will teach this two-part class, covering orchid basics, culture, repotting and beyond. Sign up by contacting the Pat Adams, Director of Continuing Education, (574) 239-8364 or padams@hcc-nd.edu .
