ORCHID BASICS ON TAP FOR MARCH 12
Tired of the snow and cold weather? Join us for a little bit of the tropics at 1:30 Eastern Standard Time on Saturday, March 12, 2005. Larry Galdes of Calypso Art Glass and Orchids near Kalamazoo, Michigan will present a talk on Orchid Basics. Come and learn how to give your plants the conditions they prefer, and bring your questions on orchid culture, potting mixes, fertilizers, repotting… Larry grows many genera to perfection but specializes in mini-catts and phalaenopsis. He will also have a variety of plants for sale at always reasonable prices. The Michiana Orchid Society meeting will be held at the River Park branch of the South Bend Public Library, on Mishawaka Avenue.
MICHIANA BOWS OUT OF LANSING SHOW
A case of the flu (Sherry) and a broken ankle (Sylvia) conspired to keep the Michiana Orchid Society from putting in our yearly display at the Greater Lansing Orchid Society show at Michigan State University. This is the “Snow Show” of prior years---we’ve been in blizzards and ice storms more times than we care to remember---but this year it was the health of our set-up and tear-down crew that prevented our participation. Shirley did make the pilgrimage to Lansing on Saturday to enjoy the show and check out the vendors’ wares under sunny skies. We’ll be back next year!
MORE SHOWS COMING UP!
There are still several shows coming up---Ann Arbor, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Chicago---so keep on encouraging your plants to put out their best blooms. Now is a good time to repot plants after their bloom season is over, and you can’t dig in the dirt outside, anyway. Think Spring!
I had Friday off and plans for setting up the Lansing show fell through, so when my husband wanted to go to Traverse City and pick up some downriggers (fishing stuff), I went along and stopped at Tim Volas’ greenhouse, and added a few plants to my collection. Tim said he is looking forward to seeing everyone at the fall show.. He had a beautiful Catasetum in bloom! He said his club also cancelled going to the Lansing show. The area is beautiful, even snow covered, and right near the Sleeping Dunes State Park. Stop by if you are in the area. Below is a copy of his card.

Annuals, Hanging Baskets, Garden Mums, Orchids, Perennials, Poinsettias, and more...
My husband is getting into the spirit of this road trip stuff. I had decided to drive to Lansing so as not to miss the whole show and he decided to ride along. When we arrived, the judging was over and the whole show was opened. This is the first time I saw the Lansing Show as a spectator. Katie, Ron and Brittany were there and later I saw Rob. He said that 4 clubs had cancelled their displays. The show was well attended. It was a beautiful day, and in a few hours some of the vendors tables were starting to look empty. Good thing I made my selections as soon as I got there.

FLORIDA WARMTH vs. INDIANA FRIGID ZONE!!
It was a cold, wintry day when we left Indiana. When we arrived in “Sunny” Florida, we couldn’t swim in the ocean, but we did get to walk on the beach – fully clothed in winter garb.
We had the chance to visit the American Orchid Society’s headquarters in Delray Beach. Our former MOS member, Steve Royer, who now works there, gave us the grand tour of the greenhouse and grounds. It was nice seeing him again and enjoyed the tour. The AOS is located on three acres with winding trails and beautiful gardens.
Traveling to the west coast of Florida, we stopped at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota. We finally had good weather when we visited for the third time. Several years ago, we visited the garden during the rainy season. It was worth trying for the third time!
We shortened our vacation due to the inclement Florida weather this year.
