HEADS UP!
JUNE 9TH MEETING AT DEB LONGWORTH’S HOME
IN NEW CARLISLE
The June 9th meeting of the Michiana Orchid Society will be held at Deb Longworth’s home in New Carlisle, west of South Bend. This is a change from our original plan! The spring flower show of irises, peonies and others at Katie and Ron Payeur’s lovely home peaked two weeks too early for our meeting, and Katie graciously passed the garden tour on to Deb. Deb’s landscaping was recently featured on the cover of Indiana Nursery and Landscape News and their home won the 2006 INLA Green Industry Excellence Award. Their home also was on the cover of In Michiana magazine for April 2007.
The MOS meeting will begin at 1:30 PM Eastern Standard Time. Guests are always welcome and refreshments will be served. See you there!
Please see driving directions below.
DIRECTIONS TO DEB'S HOUSE
There are three ways to get there if you are coming from the north:
1. From Three Oaks--go south on Three Oaks Road until you come to Spring Creek (about 2 miles). Turn left on Spring Creek Rd. and go east for about 1 1/2 miles and then go right on Jeffrey Road. Cross the border into Indiana and you are now on 650 East. At the stop sign for 1000 North turn left (east), go for 1/2 mile and turn right on 700 East. Go south on 700 East for one mile and then turn left on to 900 North. This part of the road is wooded. Go for 1/2 mile more and Deb's driveway is on the left. See finish below.
2. From Galien--go south on Cleveland Road for three miles. Turn right on Olive Branch Road. Go west on Olive Branch Road for another 3 miles, turn left on Hudson Lake Road. Go south on Hudson Lake Road for about 2 1/2-3 miles and then turn right on to 900 North. Do NOT cross the toll road. Deb's driveway is one mile on the right. See finish below.
3. Take U.S. 31 to the U.S. 20 exit going west toward Michigan City. Follow the next set of directions.
If you are coming from the east, take St. Joe Parkway to the U.S. 20, Michigan City exit and go to New Carlisle. When approaching New Carlisle, go straight just beyond the carwash, avoiding the S-curve under the railroad viaduct, (if you have gone under the viaduct, you have gone too far) then curve around onto Timothy Road. Go north for about 2 miles and turn left on Darden Road. After a mile, you'll come to a stop sign at the LaPorte County line, the road now becomes 850 North--go straight. In a half mile the road stops at a T intersection, turn right onto 850 East. Go north for a half mile, as soon as you cross over the toll road, turn left onto 900 North. Go west for a mile and you will be at Deb's house, on the right.
Finish: You have found Deb's driveway. At the front of the driveway is an old, orange farmhouse. Henry lives there. The driveway continues back past the open gate, you can't see Deb's house from there but trust the driveway, it will get you there. Watch for deer and other varmints. Call if you have trouble--(574)654-3449.
THREE RIVERS SHOW IN FORT WAYNE MAY 5-6
The last show of the spring season was the Three Rivers Orchid Society show in Fort Wayne. Michiana Orchid Society members set up a lovely exhibit at the Franke Park Pavilion I next to the Children’s Zoo in Fort Wayne. Deb L., Sandy O. and Sue Voelker set up the MOS display, with orchid plants provided by Don Keim, Sylvia G., Deb and Sandy.
Sandy and Deb stayed over to judge and clerk on Saturday morning. MOS members showed up on Saturday and Sunday to see the exhibits and check out the vendors. Seen at the show were Don K., Jean and Harry M. Bruce C. checked out the show on Sunday and took down our exhibit. Thanks to everyone for another great show!
IT’S NOT ALL OVER….WE’LL BE AT THE STATE FAIR!
The Michiana Orchid Society will again participate in the Central Indiana Orchid Society’s orchid show at the Indiana State Fair in early August in Indianapolis. This is a marathon trip, since set-up is early on a Thursday morning, ribbon judging is that same afternoon, and AOS judging will take place after dinner that same evening.
This show is an exhibit-only show; since it is at the State Fairgrounds, there will be no vendors. Volunteers will provide orchid information to fairgoers, and the Michiana Orchid Society will have membership information available to those who may be interested in our society.
See you at the Fair!
