COME ON OUT

FOR OUR FIRST SUMMER MEETING!

The first Michiana Orchid Society summer meeting will be held at the home of Ron and Katie Payeur on Saturday, June 10, 2006, at 1:30.  If you have a favorite summertime dish, please feel free to bring it to share.  Come and see where they’re growing all of those new orchids, and tour their lovely perennial gardens.  Ron and Katie live at 51530 Teasdale, South Bend---see below for directions.  If you need further directions, call 574.247.1065 or e-mail them at rpkpbp@earthlink.net.  See you there!

From Holy Cross

1. Go North on 933, towards Niles, MI

2. Turn left onto Auten Road. There is a Phillips 66 on the left and a Marathon station on the diagonal. Also Osco drug and Family video to complete the four corners.

3. Pass through stop light and go to Laurel Road. There is some sort of church on the right along with the entrance to St Joseph's park. Turn left onto Laurel

4. The entrance to River Commons Housing is on the right about 100-200 yards after turning onto Laurel.

5. After turning into River Commons, you will quickly come to a stop sign. Turn right.

6. The third road on the right is Teasdale. Take it. This is a cul-de-sac.

7. Counting the house on the corner, our house is the fifth house on the right. The number (51530) is above the garage door and there are plenty of plants in the front yard with an iris bed around the mail box.

8. Parking is not extensive. Park where you can on the street and in our driveway.

If you have a favorite summer dish, drink, dessert, etc. you would like to bring, go ahead. Just like orchids, the more the merrier.

THE LAST SHOW OF THE SPRING SEASON

The last orchid show was the Three Rivers Orchid Society Spring Show in Ft. Wayne.  Deb, Sylvia and Sandy piled plants and props into Deb’s big orchidmobile for set-up on Friday, May 5.  Thinking there wouldn’t be enough plants, the word went out to members that we needed more orchids.  And, as luck would have it, we ended up with so many plants that we had to enter our display in the 50 square foot category!  Plants for our blue-ribbon exhibit were provided by Deb, Sylvia, Sandy, Ron, Katie, Brittany and Sherry.

Early Saturday morning, Deb, Sylvia, Sandy, Ron, Katie and Brittany showed up for judging; the Michiana Orchid Society fared very well, earning a blue ribbon for the exhibit, many ribbons for plants and photos, a trophy to Katie for best Photo Art, and a trophy for Best First-bloom Seedling to Sandy for her Phrag Majestic Tresses.

The trophy for Most Plants Packed in a Camry went to Ron and Katie.  Our entire exhibit, which went to the show in a full-size van, came back in Ron’s Camry!  Incredible.  Good job, everyone!

FERNWOOD ORCHID DISPLAY

Our May meeting was held at Fernwood Botanic Gardens, continuing our relationship with this wonderful institution.  In preparation for our meeting, Michiana Orchid Society members set up a lovely exhibit, including many orchids of diverse groups, and complimentary information for the public.  Shirley started the display, Sylvia and Sherry added their plants, Sandy arrived in the afternoon to put in her plants and Deb’s plants, and Rick R. brought the final additions to our exhibit.  Everything worked out well and the exhibit would certainly have won its class at an orchid show!

The public enjoyed the display and free information during the weekend, and stopped in for Deb’s slide show of her trip to Ecuador last fall. Thanks, everyone!

GLJC MAY SEMINAR IN ANN ARBOR

Members of the Michiana Orchid Society participated in the Great Lakes Judging Center’s May Seminar in Ann Arbor, MI, May 20-21.  Presentations on the slipper orchids were given by Sandy, Rob and Greg.  Ron, Katie and Brittany were there for judging and the rest of the conference, and Rick H.  drove all the way from West Lafayette---he couldn’t resist the allure of a seminar on the slipper orchids, and paphs and phrags for sale by Paul Philips of Ratcliffe Orchids and Glen Decker of Piping Rock Orchids.  The first legal flasks of Phrag kovachii were for sale, as well as hybrids with kovachii.  Pretty pricey, but some of us had to take the opportunity to get those seedlings!  Orchid greed…

JULY MEETING AT JOHN BANNOW’S HOME…

PLANT EXCHANGE!

Get ready for another exciting meeting and plant exchange---our July 8th meeting will be at John Bannow’s Michigan home, and we’ll have our annual plant exchange.  Bring some spare divisions, seedlings or those plants that just won’t bloom for you, and pick up some other plants!  If you don’t have spare plants, there will be plenty of extras to go around.  Thin out the herd, and try out some new ones.

Meeting at my house 7/8/06 at 1:30pm. Bring plants for plant swap or sale. Directions either by mapquest or 31 bypass north to exit 15 toward St Joseph. then north past John Beers Rd, turning R on Dickenson Rd. and following it to the end to 2329 Spring Arbor. Middle house in the cul de sac with the red roof. Thanks John

November 11-12:  Michiana Orchid Society Show at Holy Cross College

Minutes from May Meeting

The regular MOS meeting was held May 14 at Fernwood Botanical Gardens with Co-President John Bannow presiding. There were twenty present, including four guests. Our May Newsletter was not on line due to a massive server crash. Greg Filter, our very efficient computer programmer said nothing could be done quickly. He e-mailed the Newsletter to most members. Normally the MOS Newsletter is on line the first weekend of the month and is easily accessed through the MOS website.

The recent Three Rivers Orchid Show at Ft. Wayne was a great success. Our MOS display, put together by Deb, Sylvia, and Sandy, covered 50 feet and won a blue ribbon! Two MOS members won ribbons and trophy's. Sandy received both for her Phrag. Katie was awarded both for her digital enhanced photo of an orchid. Ron and Katie dismantled the display and returned the plants to MIchiana.

Deb told about her favorite orchid - a small white Paph that blooms each year. "It's not very demanding," she explained, " I grow it on a light cart." She has had the plant about 20 years and currently it was part of MOS orchid display there at Fernwood. The plant is grown in Paph mix of fir bark, charcoal and oyster shell.

A judged orchid show is planned for the Indiana State Fair this summer. Deb attended a meeting of the Central Indiana Orchid Society to learn dates, times and other details. The set up will be Thursday, August 10, 6:00-10:00 am, and judging will be that afternoon starting at 4:00. Take down will be Sunday, August 13 at 5:00 pm when the show closes. A sign up sheet was available for those who can help with the exhibit or be there as "booth sitters." There will be information at the booth about the orchid societies in Indiana. This will be an opportunity for people to learn about local orchid groups in their area.

The MOS summer meetings will be held in the following member homes.

June - Ron & Katie Payeur

July - John Bannow

August - Sandy Ohlund

Are you interested in a road trip this August? Green Acres Open House is usually the third weekend of August. E-mail Sandy for exact dates. Also if you are interested in an excursion, let her know.

Bring and Brag included the many orchid out on the table for Fernwood's Mother's Day weekend. Sylvia Groat told about Vanda grass from Nates' Orchids in Naperville, IL. John Bannow discussed getting plants from a compot. He told about a "jump start solution" to get plants "ready to go and grow." Putting plants in a mix of water, sugar, Super Thrive, and Physan plumps the roots and helps the plant get a quicker start.

We broke for refreshments, then Deb showed digital photos on a DVD of her trip to Equador where she attended a conference on orchids. She had wonderful pictures of orchids growing along road sides and on the steep hills. Equador is about the size of Nevada, she said, but the elevation goes from sea level to mountains 14,000-15,000 high.

The meeting adjourned at 3:45
