MOS ON THE ROAD AGAIN…

TO CLIFF’S HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE

Get out your maps and carpool on down to the prairie homestead of Cliff Berger near Plymouth, Indiana.  Cliff’s log home is full of interesting old-time and Indian artifacts, and outdoors he has wonderful gardens and ponds, an area with natural prairie plants, and a greenhouse full of orchids and cactus.  Perhaps his native Cypripediums will be in bloom!  There are always lots of things to explore at Cliff’s home, so be sure to join us for our first summer meeting there on Saturday, June 11, at 1:30 Indiana time.

Cliff’s address is 6251 Jarrah Road, Plymouth, Indiana 46563 and his phone is (574) 936-5093.  Please see map for directions.

GROUP ORDER FROM CARTER AND HOLMES

Several members have expressed interest in again putting in a group order from Carter and Holmes in Newberry, South Carolina.  With luck and the co-operation of the US Postal Service, we will have Carter and Holmes catalogs to distribute at the June 11 meeting at Cliff’s.  Get a head start by checking out the Carter and Holmes website at www.CarterandHolmes.com.  An orchid society group order will give us a 25% discount on regular catalog prices.  (According to my math system, a 25% discount means that you can order 33.34% more plants….makes sense to me!  This is an outgrowth of Rob’s Rules:  see below.)

CONTINUING THE LOGIC…

Michiana Orchid Society member Rob Halgren has gone commercial!  His firm is called Littlefrog Farm…it’s a natural outgrowth of Rob’s orchid logic.

Rob's Rules:     http://littlefrogfarm.com
 1) There is always room for one more orchid
 2) There is always room for two more orchids
  2a) See rule 1
 3) When one has insufficient credit to obtain more
    orchids, obtain more credit

May Minutes

The May 14 MOS meeting was held at Fernwood in connection with our educational display of orchids. Our program, the AOS video "An Introduction to Orchids" was shown first as several guests at Fernwood were there to see it. Afterward our regular meeting was called to order by president Sandy Ohland.

Both the secretary and treasurer reports were approved as published. The Orchid Digest is seeking addional funds to continue publishing the many colored pages that make this magazine so outstanding. MOS subscribes to Orchid Digest, and it was voted to send $100.00 to this publisher. It was also voted to contribute $100.00 to the Great Lakes Judging Center who supply the judges for our annual show.

Deb is making signs for our October Orchid Show at Holy Cross. Signs are needed that say "Orchid Show Parking" and "Orchid Show." Press releases also need to be prinited now and then they are ready to send when the time gets closer.

At the recent Ft. Wayne Orchid Show, Deb and Sandy clerked and judged. They considered it a nice show and suggested we have an exhibit next year. The Mid America at Minneapolis was attended by Deb and Sandy who enjoyed the speakers. Several plants purchased bare root were "flattened out and placed in a suitcase" to make the return flight.

Rick reported that orchids charred in his basement fire are now putting out new growth. He commented, "fire is a natural process and here's another proof."

Bring and Brag - All could view the colorful display of many orchid varieties in Fernwood's main hall set up by Sylvia, Sandy, Sherry, Shirley, Barbara, and Lynda.

The June meeting will be Cliff Berger's. Some of his native orchids will probably be flowering outside. Plan to walk both inside and outside to view his extensive collection.

The July meeting will be John Bannow's. A plant swap is planned. Bring your duplicate plants and exchange them for a different variety.

Respectfully submitted, Barbara Wich, co-secretary
