ORCHID FESTIVAL AT FERNWOOD

Thanks to everyone for a successful Orchid Festival at Fernwood on Mothers’ Day weekend!  We all pitched in and put on a lovely show for visitors to the Botanical Gardens.  The plan was to accent education this spring, while having displays and vendors all in the same location.  Having no registration and no judging made it a bit easier to set up and the public enjoyed our efforts to offer workshops and educational displays during the show.  The People’s Choice Award was won by the main Michiana Orchid Society display.

Details with Fernwood were handled by Sandy O. while Earl K. planned the layout of the displays and vendors.  Exhibits were different this year, with a main MOS display built by Sylvia G. and Michele J.; members placed their own plants in the delightful and colorful island exhibit.  Pitching in to help with set-up were Rick and Vicky R., Dennis N., Sylvia G. and daughter Heather, Eldon G., Howard H., Jean and Harry M., Shirley K., Sherry B., Deb L., John B., Kristina L., Barb W., Paul and Michele J., Jim Y. and his mom, Rick H. and probably others.  In addition to the main display, a number of members set up smaller exhibits:  Sylvia, Sherry and Shirley built a lovely white and green display; Deb, Mark and Sandy blended plants for a mostly pink and purple display; and Paul and Michele set up a wonderful vignette entitled “If you can grow African violets you can grow orchids!”  Jim Y. again made labels for our displays.  Dunes-Kalamazoo sent a nice exhibit and our vendors---Hilltop, Calypso, Natt’s, Porter’s and Green Acres---put up lovely exhibits, also.

Publicity was handled by Fernwood, with Sandy, Sylvia and Deb helping out with articles, photos and flyers.  Jean M. covered the Elkhart area papers and radio stations.  At the show, the hospitality table was managed by Sylvia, Harry and Jean, Shirley and Michele.  Sales were handled by Paul, Mark, Dennis, Howard, Rick and Sherry.  The Fabulous Food Committee included Barbara W., Ann K., Rick and Vicky, Deb, Sandy, Sylvia, Luella, Shirley, Sherry, Jim and Michele.  Thanks, everyone, for all the goodies!

During the show, members and vendors gave workshops and demonstrations to avid listeners.  John B. demonstrated deflasking and potting compots of seedlings.  Sylvia repotted for an audience, and actually got them to help her repot some of her plants!  Vendors pitched in too---Dick Wells and Larry Galdes gave talks on general orchid culture, and Natt’s Orchids contributed a very nice poster on the various classes of Dendrobiums.  Sandy and Sylvia provided a growing under lights exhibit, with potting mixes and other items needed for orchid growing, as well as handouts and posters on orchid culture.  Vendors provided plants and a lovely etched glass vase for the raffle, and members delivered the prizes to the winners.

Members and friends of MOS showed up for the displays and vendors:  seen cruising the orchid exhibits and sales areas were long-time members Harvey Brenneise, Florie Fischgrund, Eletta Selm, Pat Pritchard and husband Dave, Barbara Sylvester, and Pat Herman.  It was great to see so many familiar orchid faces!

After a busy weekend of lovely weather and approximately 1,500 visitors to Fernwood, MOS members helped everyone tear down the exhibits.  Working hard  were Rick and Vicky, Gerry and Judy, Sylvia, Eldon and Louella, Howard, Jean and Harry, John, Shirley, Jim, Sherry, Sandy and daughter Cindy, Paul and Michele.  Thanks to everyone for contributing plants, food, muscle and smiles---all necessary for another successful orchid show!

FERNWOOD FEEDBACK

We want your impressions and ideas about our latest show at Fernwood.

1.       What are your thoughts on having an Orchid Festival as opposed to a regular judged show?

2.     Did you miss the ribbons and trophies---and registration?

3.     The date---do you think Mothers’ Day weekend is a good time for the Festival?  Or would it be better to have it earlier, in April, perhaps?

4.     Did you like the facilities at Fernwood?

5.     Did the public enjoy the show?  Did you?

     MOS wants to know!

There will be a World Bromeliad Conference in Chicago August 11 to 15 at The Westin O'Hare Hotel, by O'Hare Airport.  One can go for just a day to see exhibits and vendors - cost is nominal.  Complete information is found http://bsi.org/events/2004/chicago2004.html

Judging is on Thursday of that week, so probably Friday or Saturday would be the best days to go.

Michiana Orchid Society is now affiliated with the Orchid Digest. They approved our application at their April Board of Directors meeting and have sent us an official certificate. This means that we will now receive their beautiful quarterly for our library, and best of all, we may borrow their slide programs. For a list of titles, see http://www.orchiddigest.org.
