 PLANT SWAP!

JULY 14th MEETING AT LINDA PELKEY’S HOME

 IN BERRIEN SPRINGS

The July 14th meeting of the Michiana Orchid Society will be held at the Berrien Springs home of Lynda Pelkey.  Our July meeting will be a plant swap---bring a plant or two that you would like to pass on to someone---divisions, seedlings, or that plant that just won’t bloom for you.  If you don’t have a plant to donate, others will bring several, so everyone will go home with a new orchid.  Bring your summer-blooming plants for Bring and Brag, too.

Lynda’s address is 6909 Long Lake Road, Berrien Springs, MI 49103, and her phone is (269) 471-3956.  The MOS meeting will begin at 1:30 PM Eastern Daylight Time.  Guests are always welcome and refreshments will be served.  See you there!

MICHIANA WILL EXHIBIT AT THE STATE FAIR!

ORCHID EXHIBIT DATES ARE AUGUST 9-12

The Michiana Orchid Society will again participate in the Central Indiana Orchid Society’s orchid show at the Indiana State Fair August 9-12 in Indianapolis.  This is a marathon trip; set-up is early on a Thursday morning, ribbon judging is that afternoon, and AOS judging will take place after dinner that same evening.  Several MOS members plan to go to Indy for set-up and judging, and we’ll be sending out a call for plants for our exhibit as the date becomes closer.

This show is an exhibit-only show; since it is at the State Fairgrounds, there will be no vendors.  Volunteers will provide orchid information to fairgoers, and the Michiana Orchid Society will have membership information available to those who may be interested in our society.

     See you at the Fair!

June Meeting

Deb’s llama                                            Deb conducts her tour

                       Cyp reginae                                          Epi parkinsonianum

For the June meeting, MOS members and guests had the opportunity to visit an award winning garden landscape at Deb’s house.  The day proved to be a resounding success with everyone walking around the magnificent grounds and treated to the hospitality we have all come to expect from our members summer residence meetings.

Proud of her llamas, Deb entertained us with stories of her many years of experience in raising these unusual animals.  Many pictures were taken as the llamas were definitely photogenic and quite tame.

However, for many of our members, the highlight of the day was a guided tour to the fen where Cyp. reginae was in bloom.  Sandy O. entertained us with stories of her previous trip through the fen where she managed to get stuck in the soggy ground.  For this day, the fen was not quite so wet and, although slightly muddy, was easily manageable and definitely worth the effort.  For those who went along, we were treated to a spectacular sight not soon to be forgotten.

For all a very enjoyable and successful day.

Minutes for June

The meeting was called to order at 2:30 PM.  Minutes and Treasurer’s Report were approved as published. Membership list was passed out to those who did not receive one at the last meeting.  Lynda explained how to find her house where the next meeting will take place.  Directions will be published in the next newsletter.  Plant swap will take place at the next meeting.  Library books are posted at the MOS website.  Great Lakes Judging Seminar took place in May, with some of our members attending.  A large amount of information was available as well as vendors to add to participants collections. Don reported that the orchid that were repotted at the greenhouse in South Bend were starting to grow.  Other plants still need care.  Contact Don for more informationMember of MOS will be judging at the Indiana state fair.  Bring and brag followed with tours of the area and exchanges of  garden plants as well as a few orchids.
