JULY 8th MEETING AT JOHN BANNOW’S HOME…

PLANT EXCHANGE!

Get ready for another exciting MOS meeting and plant exchange---our July 8th meeting will be at John Bannow’s delightful Michigan home, and we’ll have our annual plant exchange.  Bring some spare divisions, seedlings or those plants that just won’t bloom for you, and pick up some other plants!  If you don’t have spare plants, there will be plenty of extras to go around.  Thin out the herd, and try out some new ones.

The Michiana Orchid Society meeting will begin at 1:30 PM Michigan time (Eastern Daylight Time) ---which is now the same as South Bend, but an hour later than LaPorte County and other areas on Chicago time (Central Daylight Time).  Don’t be confused, just come on out to see the great orchids that are happily growing in John’s greenhouse and basement area.  John’s address is 2329 Spring Arbor, St. Joseph, MI 49085.  Phone (269) 429-6823 or e-mail jBannow@aol.com .  See you there!  For directions see below.

Remind members to bring plants for swap as well as for show and tell. All are welcome to bring their favorite snacks and desserts. Thanks John

Meeting at my house 7/8/06 at 1:30pm. Bring plants for plant swap or sale. Directions either by mapquest or 31 bypass north to exit 15 toward St Joseph. then north past John Beers Rd, turning R on Dickenson Rd. and following it to the end to 2329 Spring Arbor. Middle house in the cul de sac with the red roof. Thanks John

COMING UP….

STATE FAIR ORCHID SHOW

MOS will have an exhibit at the State Fair Orchid Show August 10-13 with set-up REALLY early on Thursday, August 10, and judging that same afternoon and evening.  Tell your orchids to get going and set those buds so that we’ll have a great display for our first exhibit at this new show.  Our participation and donation to this event will give us free passes to the State Fair for those who set up and take down our display.  Plan to sign up to participate---we’ll need plants, drivers, people to set up, take down, and help out at the orchid information booth at the Indiana State Fair.  Contact Deb Longworth for further information at (574)654-3449 or TimmBoys@aol.com.

Minutes for June Meeting

The June MOSs meeting was held at Ron and Katie Payeur's home. Before the meeting we toured their indoor plant room where orchids were vigorously growing on movable plant stands. Right now Ron and Katie are trying pieces of indoor/outdoor carpet under the plants. Spraying these carpets increases the humidity for the orchids. Also the plant room has carpet on the floor. Talk to them about how they keep it clean! We learned Ron, Katie and Brittany are being tested on the first phase of studying for orchid judging.

With President Sandy Ohlund presiding the secretary minutes and treasurer's report were approved as printed in the Newsletter. Our July meeting will be at John Bannow's home and he announced an orchid plant swap will take place. Bring your extra plants, back bulbs, etc. and exchange for another one to grow in your environment.

"My Favorite Orchid" was presented by Nancy Monsma. She told about her white Phal. that happily lives in her living room where its graceful leaves add a special note of interest. She has re-potted it twice using bark, lava rock and coconut husk, and it continues to grow joyously rewarding her for the $5.46 she initially paid for the plant.

Bring and Brag brought forth orchid blooms from Sherry Burtchett, Skye Critchlow, Bruce Critchlow, Sylvia Groat, Katie Payeur, Ron Payeur, and Barbara Wich.

Our program was a Grand Garden Tour of Katie and Ron's extensive perennial gardens. The entire back yard and much of the front are devoted to colorful beds featuring plants they have obtained mostly from friends. Katie has many interesting stories of their quests for specific plants, old fashioned iris being one of Ron's favorites. Their efforts to loosen and enrich the compact soil using truck loads of compost has rewarded them with continuous blooms throughout the growing season.

Are you thinking of pitching that ailing orchid into the compost heap? Katie is an advocate for "almost dead" plants. She has successfully brought several back to life and is always looking for a new challenge. While she doesn't have an abundance of space, her "hospital" shelf does have some empty spots. So "toss" your distressed plant in her direction.

Dates for your calendar:

Indiana State Fair - Aug. 10-13 (MOS regular meeting will have to be changed.)

Green Acres Open House - Aug. 18

Mid-America Orchid Congress, Lexington KY - Aug. 25-27

Chicagoland Orchid Festival - Sept. 22-24

MOS Orchid Show at Holy Cross - Nov. 11-12

Respectfully submitted,

Barbara Wich, co-secretary

Treasures Report

I was whisked away to Alaska, totally unplanned and unexpected. I won't be home until July 5 so I won't be able to put together a treasurer's report for the newsletter. I should be able to have the final draft of the membership list for everyone and a copy of the treasurer's report for whoever is interested at the meeting. Alaska is beautiful!
