ON THE ROAD AGAIN…TO MICHIGAN!

JULY 9th MOS MEETING AT JOHN BANNOW’S HOME

John Bannow will host the July 9th meeting of the Michiana Orchid Society.  Since John lives in Michigan, we’ll go on Michigan time, so the meeting will start at 1:30 Michigan time or 12:30 Indiana time.  Come see how John has filled up his new greenhouse.  With all of his flasks and compots, the greenhouse was probably filled before it was completed!  Bring a plant or two---or more---for our Summer Plant Swap:  trade in your spare plants for something new.

John’s address is 2329 Spring Arbor, St. Joseph, Michigan 49085.  Phone:  (269) 429-6823  E-mail:  jBannow@aol.com .  See driving directions below.  We hope to see you all there!

Coming from South Bend on the bypass you can get to my house by going north on M139 (exit 15) 4.5 miles, turning R on Dickenson Rd and going .6 miles to get to River Trace subdivision. Take the L fork in the rd. .3 mi. and then turn L on Spring Arbor to the bottom of the hill. We live in the middle house with the red roof. Since the meeting is at 1:30 Michigan time (12:30 Indiana time) we'll provide sandwiches and snacks. Coming from Michigan City take I 94 to exit 27, take M 63 south (R) approximately 1.5 miles and then turn R on M 139 for 2-3 miles turn L on Dickenson Rd and follow the directions above. Maps are available via mapquest 2329 spring arbor, St. Joseph, Mi., 49085

we will have a plant swap and also bring and brag. I will have many cattleya and phal seedlings, some tiny catasetums, and paphs that are now 5 1/2 years out of flask to swap.

CARTER AND HOLMES ORDER

With any luck, the Carter and Holmes group order will be here in time for the July 9th meeting at John Bannow’s home.  If it is delayed due to the Fourth of July holiday, we’ll meet later to distribute the plants.  For those who forgot to send in your order, we can put in another group order, since we only have to reach $200 in order to receive the 25% society discount.

THANK YOU, MOS!

I received the following note of thanks from Glenda Lask, Chairman of the Great Lakes Judging Center:

On behalf of the Great Lakes Judging Center of the American Orchid Society, I would like to acknowledge and thank the Michiana Orchid Society for its recent donation of $100.00 to our Center.  Your donation will help us with our judging center expenses for the 2005 year.  As a not for profit organization, we depend on donations such as yours for the funds to run our Center, and to offer our services to the orchid-growing communities of the region.

MOS Secretary Report

The MOS meeting June 11 was called to order by President Sandy Ohlund at Cliff Berger's

prairie log home. Before the meeting we enjoyed a tour of his insect eating plant garden. These carnivorous plants are happily growing in plastic trays that contain the moist conditions they require. We also toured his shade house and greenhouse, and admired the unusual magnolias in flower.

Now we were seated on Cliff's porch. Thirteen members and two guests welcomed the cool breeze that blew through the trees while a House Wren sang, and Sandy distributed the catalogs from Carter and Holmes. A combined order will be sent in two weeks. Under "Old Business" the minutes of the May meeting and the Treasurer's Report were accepted as published in the Newsletter. Dues for 2005 are due now -- $10.00 for individual and $15.00 for a family. Our Orchid Show at Holy Cross will be October 29-30 with set up on October 28.

In "New Business" Sandy showed orchid lapel pins she and Deb purchased at the Mid America in Minneapolis. It was proposed we buy some to sell at the October Orchid Show. Cliff motioned we purchase a variety of these pins, and Shirley seconded the motion. Shirley volunteered to order the pins, and also check on an orchid shirt that could also be sold at the show.

Next meeting, July 9, will be at John Bannow's in Michigan. Note the time - 12:30 IN time, 1 :30 MI time. A plant swap is planned. Bring your extra orchids, duplicates or divisions, and exchange them for a different variety to try growing.
