LET’S GO TO MICHIGAN AGAIN!

The July 10. 2004, meeting of the Michiana Orchid Society MOS will be hosted by our own queen of African violets and Streptocarpus, Sherry Burtchett.  Meeting time will be 1:30 Michigan time, 12:30 Indiana time.  Plan to enjoy Sherry’s perennial gardens and lovely plant areas, and bring your summer bloomers---since there’s no orchid show in sight, bring your orchids to show off to other members.  It’s always a treat to see what’s in bloom during the summer months, since we never see those plants at the spring or fall shows.

Sherry’s address is 5001 Hipp’s Hollow, Eau Claire, Michigan 49111.  Her phone is (269) 461-3382 and her e-mail address is burtchett@cybersol.com.

See you there!

Here are the directions to Sherry’s Take the bypass 31 North to Exit 18 Tabor Road.  Turn right on Tabor Road and take it to Hillendale.  Turn Right on Hillendale which will changes into Hipp’s Hollow.  Once you are on Hipp’s Hollow it will be about 2 miles to Sherry’s house.  It is on the North side of the street on the left if you are following the above directions.  Sherry said she will put out a sign.  She said she will serve a light lunch so come hungry.

ORCHID BARGAINS UNDER THE BIG TOP!

Rob Halgren, a long-distance member of the Michiana Orchid Society, has purchased a large commercial greenhouse and its orchids….  While he hasn’t yet been able to transport and set up the greenhouse, he has been busy emptying it and bringing the orchids to his back yard, where he has pitched tents to shelter the plants.  Rob has invited us to come up and peruse the bargain plants---he needs to liquidate much of his stock so he has priced them at $6 each, any plant, any size. Here’s what Rob says:

“Well, most of them are still in the greenhouse up in Perry, some of
them are in a tent city in my backyard.  I'm moving them (slowly, there
are a lot) out of the greenhouse to my house, I should have most of them
at my house in a couple weeks.  It has been pretty cold...  Still don't
have final approval to actually erect the greenhouse, so that might be
an issue. Littlefrog Farm may have to purchase some more acreage...

…… all plants are $6 (except for the ones I just give away), regardless of how big they are or what they are.  I have boatloads of mini-catts (many awarded clones), oncidiums, miltonias/brassias, masdevallias in varying degrees of health, and phals.  Many of them are far too big for their pots.  This is a 'pre-repotting, inventory reduction, good lord I have way too many
plants sale'.  If I repot them the price goes way up.  *grin*  It
doesn't have to be the same weekend as Porter's thing, if a group wants
to come up some other day.
Actually, if anybody is interested and doesn't want to drive all this
way, they can get in touch with me and I can send care packages by mail.
Anything to get rid of some of these plants.”

If you would like to place an order Rob is willing to send the plants at cost.  Contact Rob directly at halgren@pilot.msu.edu or (517) 851-4472.

HILLTOP ORCHIDS OPEN HOUSE

Dick and Sandy Wells will hold their ninth annual open house on Saturday, August 14, 2004, starting at 11:00 AM---it will last, in Dick’s words, “…until whenever you orchid buffs get tired of talking orchids.”  Featured speaker will be Eric Sauer of River Valley Orchids in Ohio.  Eric will discuss orchid culture, with a focus on Phrags and Paphs.  There will be hands-on workshops for potting and dividing plants, and those interested in lab techniques will have an opportunity to learn more about this area.
