 HAPPY NEW YEAR!

START 2007 WITH NEW POTTING KNOWLEDGE…

The January 13, 2007, meeting of the Michiana Orchid Society will begin at 1:30 PM Eastern Standard Time at the River Park Branch of the South Bend Public Library on Mishawaka Avenue.  Well, we don’t want to call it a pot party  but it will be a fun and informative opportunity to get some hands-on potting experience. Katie, Sylvia and John will give pointers on mixes and repotting. We’ll spread out newspapers and dig in to potting mixes.  Bring your paphs, phrags, phals and others that can be repotted in the winter. Start the new year right by repotting some of your orchids---they’ll thank you with better growth and blooms for the upcoming show season!

Also, bring those water samples.  Ron’s TDS meter has dried out and is working again!  Ron will check samples of the water that you are using to water your orchids. Find out what you’re giving to those favorite plants and receive advice on how to remedy your water problems.  See you Saturday, January 13, and bring plants to repot and water samples to be tested!

This would be a good meeting for members to bring extra plants for sale.

GRAND VALLEY SHOW JANUARY 27-28

The Grand Valley Orchid Show will be held at Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on January 27-28, 2007.  We need volunteers to set up our exhibit on Friday, January 26, and to bring our plants back on Sunday, January 28.  And of course we need plants!  Let us know at the January 13 meeting.

JUST PLANNING AHEAD……

Coming up faster than you think, the 19th World Orchid Conference will be held January 23-27, 2008, in Miami, Florida.  It’s not too early to start thinking about heading south to this lavish orchid show.  The WOC is held in a different country every three years; it hasn’t been in the US since 1987 when the 11th World Orchid Conference was held in Miami. (Sandy was there!)  For more information on this orchid extravaganza, go to the World Orchid Conference website:  www.19woc.com .  There will be internationally famous speakers as well as exhibitors and vendors from all over the world. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to attend a WOC in the USA!

MINUTES for December Meeting

After everyone had sampled an amazing variety of goodies, the meeting was called to order at 3:10 PM at President Sandy Ohland’s home and greenhouse. Discussion of our recent show, revealed that judges and clerks had a easier time finding the plants due to Katie and Ron’s new computerized labeling system. It was pointed out that because some people do not have internet access calling or mailing lists of plants for show should be available.  There was discussion of printing labels on darker paper to blend in with the black background.  It was suggested to add a list of freebees to the membership application.  Programs and demos could be added to the poster to advertise our next orchid show. Thank you notes for vendors and clubs were discussed.  The secretary could send them, Sandy will email a list. There was further discussion of thank you to judges and clerks.  A list of upcoming shows will be printed in the newsletter.  The slate of officers was presented as follows:

Co President:  Sandy Ohland and Katie Payeur

Co Vice President:  John Bannow and Rick Rydzynski

Co Secretary:  Shirley Keim and Lisa Scholtes

Treasurer:  Deb Longsworth

There were no nominations from the floor.  It was moved and seconded to accept the slate.  The meeting was adjourned for show and tell and a few more tastes from the goodies.

Respectfully submitted,

Shirley Keim Co Secretary
