THINK SPRING AND WARM WEATHER…

FOR THE FEBRUARY 11, 2006,

 MOS MEETING!

January was unseasonably warm…and you know we will probably pay for that in February.  So let’s think spring and warm weather!  In order to concentrate on warmth, the program for February will be an Orchid Digest slide show:  “Intermediate and Warm Growing Oncidiniiae”.  We’ll learn more about these tropical beauties and how we can grow them ourselves.

The February meeting of the Michiana Orchid Society will be held at 1:30 EST (12:30 Central) at the River Park Branch of the South Bend Public Library on Mishawaka Avenue.  Refreshments will be served and guests are welcome!

(The meeting with slide show would be a good time for members to bring plants for sale.)

2006 DUES ARE DUE…

Have you paid your MOS dues for 2006?  Our Treasurer Deb Longworth will be accepting dues at the February 11 meeting, or you may send your dues to her at 7451 East 900 North, New Carlisle, IN 46552.

From Katie & Ron

For those of us who often wonder where did that hybrid orchid come from, there is a wonderful little internet site that has all the information. It belongs to the Royal Horticultural Society. The site follows

http://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/registerpages/orchidsearch.asp

Once in this page, you should see this as the title of the page

The International Orchid Register

Orchid Register search page

Towards the bottom of the page, you will see two blocks; one labeled Genus and the other labeled Grex. To determine the parents of that hybrid, put the name of the genus in the first block and the name of your hybrid in the second. Example Hybrid: Paph Leeanum, Paph goes into the Genus block and Leeanum goes into the Grex block. In this case, the answer comes back

Genus

Paphiopedilum

Epithet

Leeanum

Seed Parent

Genus

Paphiopedilum

Epithet

insigne

Pollen Parent

Genus

Paphiopedilum

Epithet

spicerianum

Registrant

Lawrence

Originator

Lawrence

Date of registration

1/1/1884

This is a simple hybrid. The answer came back with two species. Often either the Pollen or Seed Parrent are themselves hybrids, therefore you start anew by finding that cross and so it goes on as far back as you wish or until you have determined the species that go into making your hybrid.

It is also possible that the answer comes back from the original search with no results known. Not yet registered or recorded.

If you are still in the mood for research, you search in the opposite direction by clicking on the line immediately above the Genus block and then filling in the information requested.

Show Report

Sally and Sylvia did a great job of setup at the Grand Valley Show.  The display had some really BIG plants.  Good thing we took Sherry’s orchidmobile!  By the time we arrived on Sunday, the vendor’s tables were looking empty.  Some said that they went home on Saturday to pick up more plants.  Nonetheless, Sherry and I managed to find a few to add to our collections, which are bulging due to the addition of Larry’s plants.  Sherry kept the plants we picked up in her new plant area till they could be returned to their owners.  Following is a report from Sherry.  I have pictures of our display that I will bring to the meeting and send to Greg for the website.

Shirley

We had 28 plants entered, 4 photos, and 1 arrangement. One photo took a first place, one photo took a second place both by Katie and Ron Payer, The arrangement by Sally took a second place. The plants were awarded 7 first places, 4 second places, and 2 third places. Katie and Ron received a trophy for their beautiful Cymbidium.

Minutes from January

The meeting was called to order at 1:45 by Katie co-vice president.  New members were introduced.  People present had an opportunity to tell how they got started in orchids.  Minutes and Treasure’s Report were approved as published.  Deb stated that photo expenses for the show are still pending therefor the show expenses report is incomplete. Ann told of a new book on Masd.  Sandy will bring a copy next month so members can decide if we should add one to the library.  Sign up sheet for members to tell about their favorite orchid was passed around.  Each meeting a member will present a 5-minute talk on how they grow the orchid.  Grand Valley Show will be set up by Sylvia and Sally and picked up by Sherry and Shirley.  Plans for the Lansing show and others will be finalized at the next meeting.  Katie told members of Oakhill Gardens on line specials. .Meeting was adjourned for slide show, show and tell and refreshments.

Respectfully submitted,

Shirley Keim
