THE WORD IS … PHRAGS!

The February 12, 2005, meeting of the Michiana Orchid Society will feature a presentation by MOS member, webmaster and American Orchid Society Student Judge Greg Filter.  An avowed phragaholic, Greg will present a program on the genus Phragmipedium---the species, their culture, and current breeding trends in this exciting group of neotropical ladyslippers.  He will use a computer and LCD projector to illustrate his talk and will have handouts for your information, as well as specimens of phrags in bloom, with any luck.  Since he also raises many phrags from flask, Greg will have some seedlings for sale also.

Greg has earned several American Orchid Society awards for his phrags---let’s all learn how to grow these wonderful plants!

MOS EXHIBITS AT GRAND VALLEY SHOW

Our thanks to Sherry and Shirley for setting up the Michiana Orchid Society display at Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and to Sylvia and Sally for going up to Grand Rapids on Sunday to tear down and bring home our display.  Thanks a bunch!

COMING UP:  THE GREATER LANSING SHOW!

Plan to encourage your plants to bloom for the GLOS show February 26-27.  Shirley and Sherry will set up our display on Friday, February 25.  Contact them if you have plants to send to the Lansing show.

FERNWOOD IN THE SPRING

The Fernwood committee met via e-mail and has made some progress in our search for a way to redefine our presence at Fernwood Botanical Gardens in Niles, Michigan.  Rather than having a regular judged orchid show and sale, we will have an orchid display at the Fernwood Plant Sale, May 13-15.  Additionally, we will hold our May 14 MOS meeting at Fernwood, with a slide show on orchids for our members and the general plant public.  We’ll be on hand to answer questions about orchids for the visitors at Fernwood as well.  Plan to bring your orchids to Fernwood on Friday, May 13, for our display or spend a few hours at Fernwood on Friday, Saturday or Sunday to greet the public and chat about orchids.

We will continue our presence at Fernwood during the summer months with members bringing spare orchids to put on display in the fern grotto.  Additionally, we have arranged to have a display at Fernwood in the fall to promote our show at Holy Cross College at the end of October.

HAUSERMANN’S OPEN HOUSE

Need a tropical get-away?  If you have just a day, plan to visit the annual open house at Orchids by Hausermann in Villa Park, Illinois.  Dates and times:  February 24-27, from 8:00 to 5:30---Chicago time.  As always, there will be wonderful displays of blooming orchids, workshops and demonstrations, plants to buy and of course, the refreshments.  Plan to carpool!

Minutes MOS January 8th, 2005

The meeting was brought to order by Howard Heines, co-president.

Howard asked all members and guest to state their name and favorite genera of orchids.

There was a big thank you to Vicky and Rick Rydzynski for hosting our December meeting. There was a great turnout and all enjoyed themselves.

The program committee passed out list of slide programs that are available for members to note which ones they would like to see.

A spring show, at Fernwood, was talked about. Volunteers, Sandy, Sally, John, Sylvia and Shirley will look into different options and come up with a solution for the next meeting.

Shows coming up are Grand Rapids, Greater Lansing, and Ann Arbor.

Shirley and Sherry will set up and Sally and Sylvia will tear down at Grand Rapids.

Sandy brought up some suggestion for our Fall show to improve it. Items we need to work on are publicity and signage.

After bring and brag the meeting was adjourned for a slide program presented and produced by Sandy Ohlund. Costa Rica Orchid Show, March 2004

Respectfully submitted,

Grand Rapids Show

The setup for Grand Rapids went great!  Sherry, Sherry’s Granddaughter Jordan and I had a beautiful ride both there and back.  The snow that was predicted for 6 that evening did not start until I was home and asleep.  We did leave when we were done with the setup and missed the no doubt delicious buffet.  If you want attention for your display, take Sylvia’s Argcm.  The plant when standing on the table is taller than I am.  Everyone including the vendors, who were setting up their displays, came over to look at it.  That it did not get a blue ribbon is amazing!

Shirley

The breakdown for the orchid display in Grand Rapids was accomplished without a hitch. Sally provided the vehicle and Sylvia and her daughter, Heather the company. It was a beautiful day. There were at least 20 displays just of orchids. That did not include the educational, arrangements, crafts, photos and art work. Almost too much to see in the time we had. We were buying orchids while the venders were packing up, too close for comfort. Oh well more money in our pockets. The trip home was quick and smooth. Sylvia and Heather dropped Sherry's and Shirley's plants at Sherry's home. The display was very well done. With all the competion we came away with a 1st blue ribbon for Sally and Sylvia received 2 second and 1 third place ribbon
