NEWSFLASH!

SANTA HEADS NORTH

TO ST. JOSEPH, MICHIGAN!

Reset your GPS and reprogram MapQuest---the December 8, 2007, holiday meeting of the Michiana Orchid Society has a change of venue.  It will be held at the Michigan home of John Bannow.  John’s address is 2329 Spring Arbor, St. Joseph, MI 49085.  For directions use MapQuest or contact John at jBannow@aol.com or (269) 429-6823.

Bring a favorite dish for our buffet---we’ll expect those rum balls and the chocolate and peanut butter fudge!  We’ll also have our holiday plant exchange---bring a seedling, a spare division, or that plant that just won’t bloom for you---maybe it will be happier at someone else’s house!  Don’t worry if you don’t have spare plants; some members will bring extras so that everyone will go home with a new plant.

We’ll see what John is growing these days, and bring your blooming orchids for Bring and Brag.  Election of officers for 2008 will be on our agenda.  Our meeting and party will begin at 1:30 PM Eastern Standard Time.  Guests are always welcome.  Follow Rudolph and we’ll see you there!

Directions either by mapquest or 31 bypass north to exit 15 toward St Joseph. then north past John Beers Rd, turning R on Dickenson Rd. and following it to the end to 2329 Spring Arbor. Middle house in the cul de sac with the red roof.

NOTE FROM RICK HENDRICKSON

Rick H. just sent the following note:

I found out last Wednesday that I am needed here at work until mid January so it looks like I will be taking my vacation at the end of January. There are two shows going on, the World Orchid Congress and also the Tamiami International Orchid Festival between the 23d and 27th of January. Bela Vista orchids will be at the Tamiami show so I will have to go there to pick up my catasetums. If there will be a group from our club we can arrange to meet sometime during the above mentioned time frame. My mom and I ( the plan as of now ) will drive over in their van from Fort Myers Beach early in the morning. Have all interested parties bring their 2008 calenders to the Christmas party so we can make plans.  I will wait until after the Christmas party to plan my charter fishing trip schedule so there will not be any conflicts.       ---Rick

COMING UP!

January 23-27, 2008    19th World Orchid Conference, Miami, FL

January 25-27, 2008  Tamiami Internat’l Orchid Festival, Fair Expo Center, FL

February 1-3, 2008   Grand Valley Orchid Society Show, Meijer Gardens, MI

February 23-24, 2008   Greater Lansing Orchid Society Show, MSU

PLANNING AHEAD……

Coming up faster than you think, the 19th World Orchid Conference will be held January 23-27, 2008, in Miami, Florida.  It’s not too early to start thinking about heading south to this lavish orchid show.  The WOC is held in a different country every three years; it hasn’t been in the US since 1984 when the 11th World Orchid Conference was held in Miami. (Sandy was there!)  The rooms in the conference hotel are already sold out, but there are quite a few other hotels in the area, and they’re a bit cheaper, too!  Quite a few MOS members are planning to go---we’ll all have to get together when we’re there!  We also have plans to attend the Tamiami International Orchid Festival (January 25-27) about six miles away.

For more information on this orchid extravaganza, go to the World Orchid Conference website:  www.19woc.com .  There will be internationally famous speakers as well as exhibitors and vendors from all over the world. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to attend a WOC in the USA!

Minutes for November Meeting

Meeting was called to order at 1:35 by President Sandy.  One guest was present.  There are 3 new members from the show.  Minutes and Treasures Report were approved as printed in newsletter.  Dues for next year are due.  Rick stated that the AOS is having a membership drive.  There have been changes to the organization based on the survey responses.  Membership is $60.00 per year and includes the AOS magazine.  Magazine has also been changed to reflect the interests of membership.   Ann has reserved a room for the Christmas party at the library in South Bend on Kern.  There will be a plant gift exchange.  Room at library will also be reserved in case usual meeting room at library is unavailable due to renovations.  Lynda stated that more Oak Hill Gardens mix is needed for gifts to new member gifts.  Don reported that the greenhouse has lots of spikes.  Mystery plant continues to grow without a clue to its identity.   Discussion of show followed.  There were 7 AOS awards at our show.  More publicity is needed.  Signs should state that admission is free.  Sign could be posted at the local hotels for guest who are looking for local things to do. Arts and crafts were a popular exhibit at the show.  Elton explained software that could be used to print cards, postcards etc.  Nominating committee will have a slate of officers at the Christmas party.  Bring and brag followed by refreshments and a potting demonstration by Sylvia.

Respectfully submitted
