TIME FOR OUR HOLIDAY PARTY!

The Michiana Orchid Society December holiday party will be held at 1:30 Eastern Standard Time on Saturday, December 9, at Sandy’s home in Rolling Prairie. We’ll discuss the fall show and plan for the new year. Let us know what kind of programs you would like to have in 2007.

Bring some holiday goodies to share so that we can graze through the afternoon. Deb just left for Belize---we’ll miss those rum balls!  Hopefully Rick will make be able to make trip up from Lafayette with his famous fudge.

A much-anticipated highlight of our December party is the plant exchange. Bring a division or a seedling---if you don’t have any, several members generally bring extras so that everyone will go home with a new plant. Bring your blooming orchids to show off, too!

Address:  3888 East 600 North, Rolling Prairie, IN  Questions?  Call (219) 778-4457 or e-mail sohlund@csinet.net.

Directions to Sandy’s home:  from South Bend, take highway 20 or 2 west.  After New Carlisle or Bendix Woods, at “the crossroads” stoplight where 20 and 2 change directions, continue west on 20.  Shortly after the flashing yellow light of Rolling Prairie, turn right onto 350 East.  (There was a Methodist Church on the left but it burned down and is no longer there…)  Go 1 ½ miles to the end of 350 East; turn right onto 600 North.  Go approximately half a mile to the only driveway on the right side of the road.  There’s a new brick mailbox replacing the duct-taped, bashed metal one, and a long, winding driveway.  Please park in the field along the driveway before you get to the house. Hope for no snow!  See you soon!

SHOW NEWS

The Michiana Orchid Society fall show was a great success!  Everyone worked very hard to put together a wonderful show and our MOS display won the AOS Show Trophy!  MOS exhibitors and helpers included Sandy O., Sylvia G., Sherry B., Deb L., Bruce and Skye, Ann K., Pat P., Ron, Katie and  Brittany, John B., Barb W., Rick and Vicky, Dennis N., Eldon and Luella G., Lynda P., Harry and Jean, Shirley K., Betty K., Lisa S., Elton and Bessie S., and Marilyn Lee. Katie Pateur and Pat Pritchard won trophies!  Everyone brought goodies for our hospitality food service, ably organized by Barb and Ann. Katie and Shirley gave demonstrations and workshops. Skye provided entertainment for Russ and Anita’s little girls.

Members got up early on Saturday to participate as clerks and judges.  Giving out lots of ribbons were Ron, Katie & Brittany, Greg F., Rob H., Sandy O., Barbara W., Deb L., Sherry B., Don K., Sylvia G., Shirley K., and Bruce and Skye. Four American Orchid Society awards were granted, including a CCE of 91 points to a gorgeous Cattleya Portia exhibited by Green Acres Orchids. The plant weighed 200 pounds!  This specimen now has the highest award of any C. Portia in the AOS judging system…and Walt said they had a bigger plant in the greenhouse---it was simply too large to move!  C. Portia is a primary hybrid of C. bowringiana x C. labiata. Deb provided photography for the awarded plants.

Members and friends that we haven’t seen for a while came to the show---Barbara Sylvester, Pat Pritchard and Pat Herman stopped by to chat, see the exhibits and buy plants.

Set-up took many hours but teardown was accomplished quickly.  Members pitched in to help our out-of-town exhibitors and vendors load their plants and all the displays were just memories in less than two hours.  Good job, everyone!
