HAVE A MERRY ORCHID CHRISTMAS!

MOS CHRISTMAS PARTY

AT THE HOME OF RICK & VICKI RYDZYNSKI

December 11, 2004 at 1:30 EST

Our annual Christmas party will be held on December 11 at 1;30 EST at the home of Rick & Vicki Rydzynski.  Their address is 729 Angela Blvd, South Bend, and their phone number is (574) 232-8102.

The MOS Christmas party is always a fun time with lots of great food and orchid plants!  Please bring your favorite munchie to share and a spare orchid plant for our orchid give-away.  If you don’t have a division, seedling or plant that you would like to pass along, don’t worry---several members always bring extras.  We’ll have Bring and Brag so that everyone can admire your blooming orchids, too.  See you there!

Here are directions from Holy Cross College where we had our fall show.

Start out going SOUTH on US-31 BR/IN-933 toward CLEVELAND RD/US-31 BR S. 2.0 miles

2: Turn RIGHT onto W ANGELA BLVD. 0.5 miles

End at 729 W ANGELA BLVD SOUTH BEND IN

Total Est. Time: 7 minutes Total Est. Distance: 2.52 miles

I spoke with Vickie at the show and she said it is close to where we had the show, so if everyone uses his or her usual way to Holy Cross and then just turn at Angela.

FALL ORCHID SHOW AT HCC A SUCCESS!

Thanks to the many MOS members who helped make our Fall Orchid Show at Holy Cross College a success!   We had live television coverage from WNDU-TV, the Michiana exhibit won the AOS Show Trophy, and there were four AOS awards given:  one Highly Commended Certificate, two Awards of Merit and a Certificate of Cultural Merit.  For a small show, that’s a lot!  Michiana members also won two class trophies:  Pat Pritchard won the trophy for Best Orchid Art, and Sylvia Groat won the trophy for Best Orchid Arrangement.

Earl Koldyke was immediately missed as we worked on the arrangement of displays and exhibits---but we have all his blueprints from previous shows to help guide us.  Members working on set-up included:  Dennis N., Sylvia G., Harry & Jean M., John B., Deb L., Sherry B., Shirley K., Howard H., Paul & Michele J., Rick & Vicki R., Eldon and Luella G., and Jim Y., who also made all the tags for our exhibits.  Sylvia brought Wildcatt on her laptop computer to help with registration. In addition to our main MOS exhibit, smaller displays were set up by Sylvia G. and Sherry B., and Deb L. and Sandy O.

Providing publicity were Jean M. and Sandy O.  Deb L. and husband Nick set up their lovely show banner by the highway.  Manning the hospitality table were Sylvia G., Harry & Jean M., Shirley K. and Michele J.  The sales area was ably handled by Dennis N., Sherry B., Paul J. and Mark W.

The fabulous food committee was coordinated by Barb W. and Ann K.  Other members on this committee included Sylvia G., Sherry B., Deb L., Katie & Ron P., Shirley K., Michele J. and probably others who didn’t sign their names!

Our judges and clerks, although sleepy at that early hour on Saturday morning, did a wonderful job.  Judges and clerks included:  Sylvia G., Deb L., Shirley K., Howard H., Katie P., Rick H., Barb W., Dennis N., Rob H., Greg F., and Sandy O.  Greg helped with Wildcatt on his laptop, and Rob provided photography for our four AOS awards.

Sunday afternoon found many MOS members tearing down our displays and helping our exhibitors and vendors move out.  Working hard were Sylvia G., John B., Sally G., Deb L., Sherry B., Shirley K., Howard H., Paul & Michele J., Rick & Vicki R., Katie and Ron P., and Sandy O.  There were probably more members helping who didn’t sign the list, also.

Members that we don’t see at every meeting often turn up at the show.  Seen cruising the exhibits and vendors were long-time members Barbara Sylvester and Cliff Berger, as well as founding member Pat Herman.  It was good to see everyone---and thanks to all for another successful show!

NOTE FROM HARVEY IN SEATTLE

Long-time member Harvey Brenneise wrote that he missed being involved in our fall show.  He said that he had recently visited an orchid show in Seattle, and noted that in general, shows in his area are not better than our Midwest shows.  He observed that growers who have better conditions perhaps become complacent, and those of us who have to work hard to provide the proper growing environment may actually do a better job with our orchids!

Harv went on to say that his phals have not liked the cool conditions in Seattle, but his masdevallias and odonts are very happy!  He sends his greetings to all.

Please include this listing in the December newsletter if possible.

Rick
