ROAD TRIPS!

AUGUST MOS MEETING REPACED

BY THE STATE FAIR AND TRIPS!

The regular August meeting of the Michiana Orchid Society will be replaced by the State Fair exhibit and various road trips to Porter’s Orchids on August 18 and Green Acres Orchids on August 25.  See articles below for more information on these orchid activities.

MICHIANA WILL EXHIBIT AT THE STATE FAIR!

ORCHID EXHIBIT DATES ARE AUGUST 9-12

The Michiana Orchid Society will again participate in the Central Indiana Orchid Society’s orchid show at the Indiana State Fair August 9-12 in Indianapolis.  This is a marathon trip; set-up is early on Thursday morning, ribbon judging is that afternoon, and AOS judging will take place after dinner that same evening.  Several MOS members plan to go to Indy for set-up and judging, and we’ll need to gather plants by Wednesday, August 8, in order get to Indy that evening.  Let us know if you have plants or other exhibits.  We are in dire need of volunteers to help bring plants back from our exhibit on Sunday, August 12.  Please help!

If you can help set up or take down, please contact Sandy at sohlund@csinet.net (219) 778-4457, Deb at TimmBoys@aol.com (574) 654-3449 or Ron and Katie at rpkpbp@earthlink.net  (574) 247-1065.

This show is an exhibit-only show; since it is at the State Fairgrounds, there will be no vendors.  Volunteers will provide orchid information to fairgoers, and the Michiana Orchid Society will have membership information available to those who may be interested in our society.

     See you at the Fair!

PLANNING AHEAD……

Coming up faster than you think, the 19th World Orchid Conference will be held January 23-27, 2008, in Miami, Florida.  It’s not too early to start thinking about heading south to this lavish orchid show.  The WOC is held in a different country every three years; it hasn’t been in the US since 1984 when the 11th World Orchid Conference was held in Miami. (Sandy was there!)  The rooms in the conference hotel are already sold out, but there are quite a few other hotels in the area, and they’re a bit cheaper, too!  Quite a few MOS members are planning to go---we’ll all have to get together when we’re there!

For more information on this orchid extravaganza, go to the World Orchid Conference website:  www.19woc.com .  There will be internationally famous speakers as well as exhibitors and vendors from all over the world. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to attend a WOC in the USA!

Update at the Conservatory

Flowering

1 Dendrobium currently on display – 4 spikes

1 Dendrobium will be moved on display next week – 2 spikes

1 Vanda in a wood slated basket in spike and will be a few more weeks before it goes on

 display.

Many, many plants with new growth, it is really looking great on the orchid bench.  The

 B. nodosa has 5 sheaths showing and several of the Catts. are sheathing as well.

We have a work day needed soon – repotting the 140 or so Cymbidiums, more on this at

 a later date.

We have a ‘mystery’ plant.  This plant is in a wood slated basket, has a leaf span of approx. 18 inches, strap shaped leaves about 3” wide by 10” long.   The plant is about 24” tall and looks to be monopodial.

There are 3 new growths on the plant.  One coming out of the moss in the basket is a new lead.  One coming from a leaf/stem axis is a new lead.  (monopodial?) Another coming from a higher leaf/stem axis may be a spike – I can only hope.   Many new roots are appearing as well, nice and fat as a night crawler with bright white velamen and a big green growing tip.  I will shoot for a photograph next month and you can have a hand at identifying….

Some good news – a local nursery, specializing in ponds, is going to rejuvenate the lily pond at the conservatory.  They will clean out the pond and replace the fountain and get it running again.

More good news – a gentleman has been volunteering several times each week, working full days and boy does it show.  His efforts combined with some dedicated staff are starting to make a difference.  Several large trees (schefflera and key lime) have been drastically pruned back, opening a lot of under story for some of the other plants to enjoy.

And maybe even a little more good news – I was interviewed last Sunday (at the right place at the right time) by the editors of Grand Gardens, a magazine originating from Grand Rapids.  They were at the conservatory looking for places to put in their magazine for day-trips from the Grand Rapids area.  I was able to get in a few free plugs for MOS too and the support the society is giving the conservatory! ! !

Minutes for the July Meeting

Sandy called the meeting to order at 2:30 at Lynda’s house, after tours of the garden and viewing of the items for the plant swap.  Minutes and Treasurer’s Report were approved as posted.  One guest was present.  There will be no meeting in August, due to display at the State Fair and road trips.  Christmas party will take place at the greenhouse across from the Library in South Bend.  Don will make arrangements with the conservatory.  Extra copies of How to Grow Orchids and Lexion will be ordered to sell at the show.  Lynda will order.  Plants will be gathered on Wed., August 8th for the State Fair Show.  Take down will be Sunday of the same weekend.  There was discussion of the Chicago Orchid Festival. Followed by discussion of software for orchid identification.  Show and tell followed.

Respectfully submitted,

Shirley Keim
