MOS EXHIBITS AT INDIANA STATE FAIR!

August is turning out to be a very busy month for MOS orchid growers!  Instead of our scheduled August meeting at Sandy’s house, we’re going to set up an exhibit at the new orchid show sponsored by the Central Indiana Orchid Society at the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis.  Set-up will be very early in the morning on Thursday, August 10, with ribbon judging that same afternoon and AOS judging after dinner on Thursday evening.  Whew.

We’ll have to gather our plants early on Wednesday; Deb and Sandy will be going down to Indianapolis on Wednesday evening in order to be able to enter the fairgrounds between 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM, when all of the exhibitors must have their plants inside the Agriculture and Horticulture Building.  Ron, Katie and Brittany will also work on set-up of our exhibit and participate in judging on Thursday.  Take-down of our exhibit will be on Sunday, August 13.

We’ll need plants and foliage for our exhibit; if you have something you would like to send to the Indy show, please contact Deb TimmBoys@aol.com or Sandy sohlund@csinet.net; also Ron and Katie rpkpbp@earthlink.net .

ROAD TRIP!!!

Our annual pilgrimage to the orchid growers of Michigan will take place on Saturday, August 19.  Carpools are being organized to visit the 25% off Orchid Sale at Porter’s Orchids in Grand Ledge (10:00-5:00) http://www.portersorchids.com/about_us.htm and the Western BBQ, Open House and Orchid Sale at Green Acres in Charlotte (10:00-6:00) http://www.greenacresorchids.com/about.htm .  There will be lots of wonderful orchids and great food to carry us through another road trip!  Call your orchid friends and join a carpool to enjoy these orchid events.

THE PAYEUR FAMILY ACCEPTED AS STUDENT JUDGES!

Congratulations to Ron, Katie and Brittany Payeur on their acceptance as student judges in the Great Lakes Judging Center of the American Orchid Society!  Studying orchids has become a family affair as all three have become immersed in orchids.  Going to orchid nurseries, orchid shows and caring for their rapidly increasing collection of orchids---the Payeurs are living and breathing orchids!  Now they are making the monthly trek to Ann Arbor for judging and training sessions.  Ron, Katie and Brittany join other Michiana Orchid Society judges Greg Filter (Student), Rob Halgren (Probationary) and Sandy Ohlund(Accredited).  Congrats!

The July MOS meeting at John Bannow's Michigan home overlooking the St. Joseph River was attended by 21 members and 3 guests. We eagerly selected plants from the abundant choices at the "Plant Swap,"  toured John's well filled greenhouse, enjoyed the variety of flowers around his house, admired his blooming orchids inside the house, and nibbled delicious goodies from the overflowing table.

At 3:30 we settled on the porch for our meeting.  A gentle breeze wafted up from the river, and we were entertained by a baby raccoon who decided it was his lunch time and dined on mulberries from the tall tree by the porch. Undisturbed by our meeting, he settled into a crotch of the tree for his afternoon nap.

President Sandy Ohlund presided and the minutes of the June meeting were accepted as printed in the Newsletter. Treasurer Deb Longworth, who just returned from Alaska, reported we had " as much money in the treasury as last month," and then passed out the new membership lists for 2006.  If you didn't get one, be sure to ask for one at our next meeting.

This August is an especially busy month for MOS members.  Our exhibit at the Indiana State Fair will be set up in Indianapolis Thursday, August 10 and taken down Sunday, August 13.  Since this is the weekend of our usual MOS meeting Shirley motioned the August meeting be skipped.  The motion was seconded and approved by the members -- thus there will NOT be a regular meeting this August.

Set up committee August 10 include Katie, Ron, Brittany, Sandy and Sylvia.

Take down on August 13 will be done by Deb.

If you can help either or both dates, please call one of these members.

Ann Kuntz, librarian, said no new books have been added to our library. Ron Payeur recommended we consider purchasing the set of books "Cattlayas and Their Relatives" by Carl L. Withner.  These are currently sale priced through Timber Press.

We have three MOS members who are now official students of orchid judging. Ron, Katie, and Brittany passed their first test with flying colors and have been accepted into the student judging program at Ann Arbor.  Congratulation to all three!

Bring and Brag included magnificent plants brought by Brittany Payeur, Sylvia Groat, Rick Rydzynski, and Dennis Norkus.

The meeting adjourned at 4:00.
