MICHIANA MEETING APRIL 7th!
The April meeting of the Michiana Orchid society will be held a week before our regular meeting time this year. We will meet on April 7 due to the Central Indiana Orchid Society show on the weekend of April 14-15.
We have participated in quite a few shows lately, with more MOS members learning how to design, set up and register plants for our display. This month we will see slides of a spring orchid show in Costa Rica, where there are gorgeous examples of the national flower, Guarianthe skinneri. You may know this wonderful orchid as Cattleya skinneri. By whatever name, it’s a show-stopper when grown to specimen size, which is not uncommon in Costa Rica.
The MOS meeting will be held at the River Park Branch of the South Bend Public Library at 1:30 PM Eastern Standard Time. Guests are always welcome and refreshments will be served. See you there!
SHOW IN INDIANAPOLIS APRIL 14-15
The spring show sponsored by the Central Indiana Orchid Society will be held in Indianapolis on April 14-15, with set-up on Friday, April 13. We’ll need plants as well as volunteers to set up the Michiana Orchid Society exhibit and to take down on Sunday, April 15. No snow or ice storms are predicted for this show!
ANN ARBOR SHOW
Although Michiana judges made the trip to the Ann Arbor orchid show on Friday, March 16, we were unable to set up a display this year. Let’s plan to participate in this lovely show next year!
MID-AMERICA IN GLENCOE, ILLINOIS, APRIL 27-29
The MAOC (Mid-America Orchid Congress) will meet at the Illinois Orchid Society Spring Show at the Chicago Botanical Gardens in Glencoe, Illinois, on April 27-29. This will be a spectacular event with many exhibits and vendors, as well as an exciting slate of guest speakers. The Illinois Orchid Society sends this description:
Our list includes Patricia Harding, co-author with Carl Withner of one of his Cattleya series, The Debatable Epidendrums. Patricia will speak about Huntleya, and related genera. Hadley Cash, from Marriott Orchids, who recently published an overview of his Paph breeding program in Orchid Digest, will speak on that topic. And Dr. Eric Christenson, noted author and taxonomist, will have two lectures, one on Maxillaria, and the other on his work in Peru with David Bennett, on a modern inventory of orchids in Peru.
Joining them now will be Alfredo Manrique, of Centro de Jardinería Manrique, one of two nurseries in Peru authorized to grow and sell Phrag kovachii. This is quite a timely addition to our list of speakers. Seedlings of Phrag kovachii are now becoming available for sale in the United States, and we will have an opportunity to hear the saga of this new, wonderful flower from one who is deeply involved in its distribution and conservation.
I hope all of you will want to attend this event, and spread the word to all of your orchid-growing friends. Information on registering for the conference is on the IOS web page, www.iosoc.com
