To Whom it may Concern 11/15/05

It’s now in fashion for Democrats in Congress to publicly oppose the war in Iraq, including those who originally supported it, and it appears that Republicans are jumping on the bandwagon too. They have all noticed that public support for the war is slipping lower and lower each day, and it is now safe for them to either have a conscience or to act as if they do.

In the 2006 elections, Indiana citizens will be able to vote again for our representatives in Congress. I hope we will all look for and avidly support candidates who had sense enough to recognize at the war’s outsetthat it was an illegal, preemptive action with questionable justifications; candidates who were ethical enough and courageous enough to consistently and continually speak out against the war and to demonstrate against it, even when it was not in fashion and not supported by the polls.

We do not need to elect more ethically-challenged, poll-driven candidates who only follow the latest fashion. We need to look for candidates who have insight, courage, and a conscience. And to find those candidates we may need to look beyond the predictable, recycled candidates the parties will offer us in the primaries. We, too, need to have our own sense of ethics and conscience in deciding who merits our vote.
