PARTNERS IN LEARNING:

WHAT PARENTS SAY ABOUT COMMUNICATIONS

Indiana parents shared these thoughts in a recent informal telephone survey.

"More information! Getting a newsletter every other month is not enough for me!"

"As a parent new to the system in midyear, I felt totally in the dark. I had no idea when the grading periods were, what programs were offered, when sports tryouts were, whether or not there was a PTA."

"I need more understandable information about what goes on around the whole process of education-not just in the building, but in the district too."

"The weekly newsletter from my child's elementary school was really important to me. It kept me connected to things that were happening in the school beyond my child's classroom."

"My daughter starts high school in less than a month and I haven't received anything. I don't even know if there is an orientation. I want to attend school-related things, but I need to know about them ahead of time so I can plan around them."

"I seem to find out about after-school activities by accident--or not at all."

"I'd like to read more accolades-not only about kids' achievements, but teachers too. There are a lot of good things going on with our faculty that we parents don't know about."

"I greatly appreciate the Homework Hotline at my son's middle school. It gives me an easy way to double check on homework assignments by phone without bothering anyone. It's helpful when he's been absent too."
