PARTNERS IN LEARNING:

COMMUNICATING IDEAS

TO CHECK OUT

Designate set times for teachers to be available to take parents' phone calls.

Videotape a classroom, field trip, lesson, children's performance, or program. Let students check out the tape to share with their families.

Use a student assignment book for regular home-classroom communications. Include space not only for homework tasks and reminders for items to take home or bring back to school, upcoming tests or long-term projects, but also for parents and teachers to exchange notes, comments and questions. (A sample page is included with this publication.)

Put together information packets for volunteers. Include a map of the school with emergency exits, parking information, a welcome letter, where to go for help and supplies, equipment operating instructions, and teacher names and room numbers. Plan a packet for new families, too.
